  1. 24ac is probably SKEWS, 'saints' giving S S and there is a London garden by name Kew (never been to London but what I know from my reading).

  2. 17: I think it's L + AOS after deleting CH from chaos. CH must be some Internet abbr for Switzerland.

  3. 17 Student in confusion when not finding Switzerland a red state (4) L (-CH) AOS CH= Confoederatio Helvetica = SWITZERLAND

  4. Yes I got the CH just as you'll were typing your comments

  5. Have since added the link to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in the CW

  6. CH for Switzerland is a common abbreviation, and it is also the Internet domain suffix for Swiss sites.

For example, to visit Google India site, you might type in www.google.co.in / www.google.in

To visit the Google Switzerland site, you need to type in www.google.ch !

  7. Col., Dice, as pointed out by raghu in Orkut, is the plural of Die.

In particular, if 18 Ac were to be phrased as:

Dice, say, in an area for the Oriental red state (4) -

The resultant anno would be CUB{-E+A}S ->> Cubas , which I think the compiler didn't intend :)

I feel 'Die' is the correct word to use, though the surface reading might prove very misleading.

  8. 23 - Shameless piercing (6) - BRAZEN [DD] ? BRASSY

  9. Actually I took the meaning of CUBE as DICE or chopping in cooking, that's how I got misled. Maybe a hangover from my stint at cooking lastnight when I hade to dice the onions while making omelette's for dinner ;-)

  10. Anyone for the annotation of Educated?

  11. 15 - Wise sheik from the east hoards food delicacies (8) - EDUCATED Anno pending

    Wise - Required definition
    sheik - DUDE
As in: A man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance : Synonym - Dude (Refer WordWeb)
from the east : Reversal indicator
    hoards : CC indicator
food delicacies - Cate (Synonym, as in: Provisions; food; viands; especially, luxurious food; delicacies; dainties)

    EDU{CATE}D<-

  12. Thanks Ganesh,
I would have never got that one, Dude I had heard of but never connected it to Sheik. Cate is a new word for me

  13. Wish some of our setters would introduce Indian references rather than Unindian ones like: Sheikh = dude and states like Minnesota etc. Reference to Countries is fine, as you are expected to have some GK, but instances such as in today's and Sat CW are beyond most. Result of Neyartha living in the US?

  14. 'Cate' is a term that I first came across when I read Shakespeare in college.

'Cate' is singular; but it's usu. used in plural, meaning 'choice food, delicacies, dainties'.

'Food delicacies' in the clue might yield CATES, not CATE.

  15. Chaturvasi,

I use Wordweb Pro as reference while compiling crosswords, and the entry I used was:

    Noun: cate
    Pronunciation key: keyt
Provisions; food; viands; especially, luxurious food; delicacies; dainties

I looked up online and found that you are right, it usually occurs as 'cates'.

By the way, for those interested, the word 'cater' has its origins in the word 'cate'

  16. One may use Wordweb as an immediate reference tool but not as ultimate authority.
A statement that I made in rec.puzzles.crosswords when someone cited this - it was supported by others.
We don't know where the dB in Wordweb comes from; anyway, in my opinion, it's elementary.
Many standard dicts. are available online if one cannot reach for a print edition.
