  2. Today's cryptic was particularly frustrating, just as things had begun to look up over the past couple of days. I understand from your indications this week that tomorrow's crossword would be by Gridman, but how do we know how many days each compiler gets?

  3. Change position on the second day in England (4) - ?O?E (MOVE ?}
    Second = Mo from mo(ment)
    Day = V from Valentines day (V-Day) I guess

  4. Hi Aash,
    The sequence goes like this
    Nita Jaggi - 10
    Gridman - 6
    M Manna - 7
    Sankalak - 6
    Neyartha - 2

  5. Hi Maddy,
    V can come from V-day of WW-II also however there is no indication for either

  6. Hi Sir,
    I guess 'V' for day is an acceptable abbreviation for cryptic xwords. I ve seen it used elsewhere also.

  7. Col,

    How come the sequence is in precisely the inverse proportion of the compilers' capabilities?

    I'd much rather attempt 10 cryptic crosswords a month that have been set by Neyartha or Sankalak and only 2 by NJ.

  8. Aash,
    That can be answered only by the powers that be at THE HINDU

    I have been solving or managing to solve cryptic crosswords in various Indian and foreign journalis for over two decades now. By convention, I have been filling the clue 'sailor' with 'AB' or 'tar'. Can you throw some light on the genesis, etymology or the connection?

    I could be a Late Latif in hazarding this query, but, much to my delight and good fortune, I happened to bump into your blog very lately.

    As usual, a big salute to you for your initiative in launching this forum, besides to your patience, perseverance and consistency.

    Mind you, no flattery intended !

    Richard

  10. Thought M or MO could stand for second day - i.e. second day of the week. The V baffles me though.

    @Richard - Thought AB stands for Able Bodied , thus sailor..

  13. Hi Afterdark,
    You are right about Hanger, so the answer should be annotated as HANGAR(~hanger)
