  1. Hi all,
    I added a map to my blog after seeing it on another blog. This map indicates the locations of visitors to my blog. On the first day I have had the following visitors, 35 from India, 17 from USA, 1 each from UK, France, Portugal and one from the Asia/Pacific region which from the map looks like China!!

  2. Hi Col

    Had noticed the curtain-raiser about the map during the last two days and was eagerly waiting for it. Congrats and thanks.

  3. The following clues also were nice ones.

    6 dn - ”Woman: shall we go for a buzzer or __ __ __ __ better option?” (2,1,4,1) - IS A BELL A [DD]
    8 dn - Untidy — untidy with nothing on (6) - NUDITY*
    10 dn - One who goes for the digs (13) - ARCHAEOLOGIST [E]
    15 dn - French wine, pulse, with two ducks for the meal (8) - {VIN}{DAL{OO}

    However, a couple of queries:

    3 dn - Drive ne’er paved on the limits of Gooty (6) - ENER*{G(-oot)Y}

    What is "Gooty"? Is it an Indian word or name?

    21 dn - Sailor despatched, showing a lack of attention (6) - {AB}{SENT}

    Showing a lack of attention could lead only to 'absent-minded', not just 'absent'.

  4. Hi Richard,
    Gooty is the name of a place in Andhra, I think it falls on the Chennai - New Delhi railway route.

  5. Correction it falls on the Chennai - Bombay route, somewhere near Guntakal

  6. 21 dn - Sailor despatched, showing a lack of attention (6) - {AB}{SENT}

    Showing a lack of attention could lead only to 'absent-minded', not just 'absent'.

    A good question!

    On the face of it, I too would have thought so!

    But Gridman, from what I have observed of him, is a careful composer who must be doing a lot of dictionary work before he sends the crossword for publication.

    His tool of reference must be Chambers which has "inattentive or dreamy" as one of the meanings of 'absent'.

    That said, if you argue that it's wide usage that matters and not some obscure meaning in a dictionary, I won't have any response.

  7. D16- I thought conservatives were RED, how come it refers to BLUE here?

  8. @sriks7
    Conservatives are Blue and Labour part Red in the UK. See this THE BLUE BLOG
    You also would have heard of the term 'True Blue' see TRUE BLUE

  9. My COD too has one of the meanings of absent as 'Showing a lack of attention' which is precisely the last five words in the clue, so we cannot call it an obscure meaning, whereas 'absent-minded' is defined as forgetful

  10. And just to complete the rainbow of colours - Liberals are yellow!

    In current colloquial english you can definitely say someone is looking absent if they are not paying attention, especially in the phrase "you have an absent look about you"

  11. Wow, a Pearl Harbour of clarifications aimed at the 'absent' me. Thanks, friends !

  12. 5A - i guessed it as 'SIMIAN' which means monkey and it happily fitted with other words however i couldn't find the anno working backwards...looking at the anno you gave, it is quite a tough one which i could never have guessed.

  13. In the US, Blue represents Democratic Party (liberal), and Red Republican Party (conservative).

    I still did not get that answer right, but that is a different matter!
