Many sources on the Net mention this as made of two words - TAKLA MAKAN, which many Indians would comprehend as 'bald building'!

  2. Hi Richard,
Your translation is the first thing that struck me also when I got the answer.
To all foreign visitors TAKLA means BALD and MAKAN means Building or House in Hindi

  3. Yes, MAKAN is house and a building is IMARAT.

  4. Shuchi is running a poll on Crossword Unclued, see her comments below

Do you think that words in Neyartha's grids are way too obscure?

Yes, or no, or somewhere in between - cast your vote here.

Poll: Should Neyartha use fewer “GK words”?

  5. Guess it is time Colonel interviews Suchi and posts in this blog. With she being the interviewer we don't know much about her.

  6. Colonel , I owe you a Thanks. Since the time I became a regular to your blog, I have become a better solver, but it is not just that. Like Richard said I had a mindset about Sunday Crosswords being tough. Now I almost complete them, so much so that I am hunting the archives of Hindu in the Net.

  7. Thanks for writing about the poll, Colonel.

LOL @ Afterdark's suggestion about the interview. What do you want to know?

  8. I second Afterdark's idea of an interview. I have found the CrosswordUnclued site is backed by good research and extensive information. The presentation with an assortment of links is simply classy.

  11. 1 across - A poor man’s train reservation? (5,5) - THIRD CLASS [CD] No longer there in Indian railways

If I am not mistaken, the Third Class in the Indian Railways was abolished by Tonse Anant Pai, during his tenure as the union minister of railways.

T A Pai (1922 – 1981) was the nephew of Dr T M A Pai (1898 – 1979), founder of the world-renowned education and healthcare township of Manipal near Udupi in Karnataka.

Syndicate Bank, earlier known as the Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Ltd (CIBSL), was founded by Dr Pai. This bank was the pioneer in launching the daily deposit scheme called the Pigmy deposit some decades ago.

T A Pai served as the head of CIBSL, and later was picked by the late Indira Gandhi to the national level. T A Pai had also served as the chairman of the Food Corporation of India and the Life Insurance Corporation of India.

When T A Pai fell out of favour with the late Indira Gandhi, the latter took a sweet revenge by fielding Oscar Fernandes, son of Pai's favourite school-teacher in Udupi, in a keenly watched Lok Sabha contest from the constituency bearing the name of the same town (Udupi), resulting in Pai's defeat.

Pai never seemed to have recovered from the shock, until his death.
