  1. Got all except 13 Ac. Declares.
    I was looking for the name of a creeper (non-runner).

  2. Good morning everyone

    20D - Bill and Sarah must admit copper's charge (7) - {AC}{CU'S}AL ? Where did AL come from, what's the connection between Sarah & Al

    Deepak, this is my take. SAL is short for Sarah. AC and SAL admitting CU.

  3. @Richard,
    In my opinion SAL would be a short form for Sally and not Sarah

  4. Deepak, sorry for coming back on this. But I have come across SAL as a short form of Sarah many times in cryptic crosswords in the past.

    Probably the following link will clear the doubt.

    http://www.babynamespedia.com/meaning/Sarah

    "Other English forms include the short form Sal, the pet forms Sadie, Sadye, Salli, Sally (used in French as well), Sarie, and Sassie, and the spelling variants Sara (used in German as well), Sarha, Sarhah, Sarra (used in Russian as well), Sarrah, Sarrey, and Zarah (used in German as well)."

  5. I think I learned some new word associations today.

    C = Some
    RE = Soldiers
    SE = Quarter
    Commies = Red

    I got 'em right I reckon.

    I'm not sure 'bout the L in 22D. Where is it coming from?

  6. Dan- I think L is for apprentice. RE for soldiers is also what I learnt today

  7. @Dan,
    Usha is correct L = Learner = Apprentice.
    RE comes from Royal Engineers we also get at times RA which stands for Royal Artillerey

  8. 8 - Do applicants for jobs in them go on waiting lists? (11) - RESTAURANTS [CD]. I was thinking of respondents as the answer. I need some explanation
    from Col, please.
    8 - Be quiet about what happens after six (7) - S{EVENT}H.I enjoyed this clue except that it could have been worded as after sixth than after six.[then, it would have become too easy].

  9. 8D... I think "waiting" here refers to people who wait tables... If they get the job, they'll be on the list of waiters = waiting list.

  10. @Dan,
    That was my train of thought as well, regarding RESTAURANT

  11. 13 Ac DECLARES (DD)

    This fits in with the crossing and also one part of the clue agrees - that one who says (avers) may be declaring.

    But, how does it fit in with 'Non-runner' which is a term used for any contestant (e.g., horse) that did not start or was exempt from wagering.

    Are we considering it similar to somebody who throws in his/her hand in rummy (scoot)?

    Can Col. throw some light on this?

  12. I think non runner refers to non gun runner which fits in with DECLARER

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not very clear myself, that's why there is a question mark after declares. I was thinking in terms of a cricket declaration.

  14. 13A: Both parts fit better with DECLARER.

    Is a non-runner, one says (8)

    DECLARER (is a non-runner) is one that surrenders a turn to bat in cricket.

    DECLARER (one says) is also one who announces something.

  15. @ Dan
    You are correct about "SE = Quarter"

    It is a frequent usage in crosswords, I noticed it for the first time in the recent Hindu crosswords after I resumed solving them.

    Quarter can refer to one of the four quarters of a map - SE, SW, NE, NW
