  1. HI
HEARTBREAK HOUSE to be Googled after putting down Heartbreak. So also CRICCIETH (maybe a walkover for the Brits, but we Indians would know much about those odd souding and even more oddly spelt Welsh places). A-DO-RN-MEN-T , CH-E-AP, PR-OGRESS, EASY CHAIR, ENT-REPO-T, UNETHICAL*, EVER-GREEN,A-VE(R)T, GRAPES-HOT, AP(S)E, and A-PA-CHE were nice. NOT FOR ALL THE TEA IN CHINA was superb. CARRIAGE DOGS had to be confirmed by Google. STEER CLEAR was good punning.

  2. 19a Not sure of the role of 'carriage'. Could not find a composer called BERL, though found one called ERL. If that is correct, how does B-erl-IN fit in with carriage, any thoughts?

  3. 19 - Composer in carriage in capital city (6) – {BERL}{IN} .
Can it be MERLIN since Merlin is a composer.

  4. @Kishore,
I made a mistake in the annotation actually it is a triple
    See BERLIN as composer
    See BERLIN CARRIAGE
    and of course capital city

  5. 19d: Incidently Berlin in also a type of carriage....

    Re 10a
I don't agree with your anno.
I had an occasion to comment:
    Quote
Re the clue 10a Start of number trio’s playing? (5) INTRO

This can be simply seen as (NTRIO)*, that is, anagram (‘playing’ as the AInd) of N (number) and TRIO. In which case, ’start’ is the def.

However, this does not take into account the question mark at the end of the clue. So the revised anno is: Anagram (playing) of N (start of ‘number’) and TRIO. For definition we have to reread the clue as a whole.

Since ‘intro’ is the ’start’ or the opening passage of any musical piece, not necessarily one that a trio is playing, the question mark gains added significance.

I have no doubt that this is the setter’s intention.

The use of words ‘number’, ‘trio’ and ‘playing’ in a clue for which the solution is a musical term is quite pleasing.

    Unquote
The suggested anno was confirmed by the setter himself.

  10. Hi everyone

Was out for some time in the morning.Logged in late.

Interesting comments. How come no one has said anything about today's pics? The cartoonist who drew the Dalmatian one was at his mischievous best!

  11. CV@10:18,
What is wrong with my annotation that you do not agree? I have just indicated that N has been included in the jumbled TRIO. Start obviously is doing double duty here.
Your anno may be what the setter intended but I have explained the way I see it.

  13. The point to make is that it is not a c/c clue but rather an anagram of N and TRIO.
N is from 'start of number'. It, with TRIO, 'is playing'.
If N is from number, then 'start' may be taken as the def. But that is not the case.
For def, we have to reread the clue as a whole.

  14. Well, that is my take.
Of course you are quite entitled to see it as you do.
My apologies if I am making too fine a point.

  16. @ Col: Yesterday you gave an illustration for 21d and it appeared as 3d Grave letters that bring a tear (3) RIP in ET ! Sounds like one more than three vision ? (9) Or double vision twice?

  18. 10A Start of number trio's playing? (5)
    I see it as
    (N[umber] + TRIO)* &lit.

It isn't just "start" doing double-duty (which I would call weak clueing) but the whole clue standing as definition for INTRO, which is pretty neat.
