  1. Happy Sunday morning one and all

A typical Sunday mixed bag. PICK UP ON, CAMBRIDGE CIRCUS, AYE-AYE, UNDER LOCK AND KEY etc were tricky. RHODESIA - a nice surface reading. A &it, I presume.

CAMBRIDGE CIRCUS (already mentioned above), CONFIDENCE TRICK and DEFINITE ARTICLE were heady. TACKSHOP, BACKSTOP and TRENCHANT - well constructed.

  3. As my friends here might be aware, I rarely use the grid for crosswords published in India and blogged on. (Of course, I do use it if I have to solve a UK crossword and write a report on it.)
    Honestly, I couldn't cold-solve 21ac fully.
Maybe because in that split second I guessed the second word as ACCOUNT, I couldn't get the solution in its entirety.
    Anyway -
How does the clue resolve itself?
Aren't reports in other newspapers definite?
I have worked for (Indian) Express and later for a periodical from the stable of a well-known newspaper. I hold no brief for either when I raise this question.

  4. Ah, just after I wrote the above note and as I scrolled up and once again read the clue, I think I can stay and provide the answer myself.
But let me see what others think...

  6. Some really nice clues.

I found this one to be a bit tougher than usual. There were quite a few British references.

HEARKEN, TUCK SHOP OCELOT were new words for me.

Spelled it as MASTREO (I know, ridiculous) and was stuck with some of the clues on the right half for a long time.

17D: RHODESIA was nice. I presume it was intended to be an &Lit, but couldn't quite understand the significance of anagram fodder "so I heard." How does it fit in to the surface reading? Is it just to make it sound complete?

  7. VJ,

It would have been an &lit if the answer were to be ZIMBABWE

  8. Deepak, It's RHODESIA's name that's been changed. So I think it's an &Lit.

    The way I see it...

    changed: RHODESIA
    changed to: ZIMBABWE and ZAMBIA

The stip is still Max 3 PP.
I note that you, as a regular, have observed self-abnegation in order to make up for an excess solution that happened to be entered in this thread.
    This is appreciated.
We have a fine Community of thoughtful members and it's a pleasure to be together - though in distance we are apart by miles and miles inland and across seas.
I fervently hope that in any second Sloggers and Bloggers convention there will be a chance of meeting some of the regulars.

It will be fun to meet and have a second Sloggers and Bloggers - I had to miss the first one. But if there is interest in one, I will love to be a part of it - I am in Chennai until the end of Nov. Even if one were to organize one in B'lore this time, I will try and make it as I believe the last one was in Chennai.

I am rather busy until (and including) Nov. 26.
If it is Bangalore on Sat 27th or Sun 28th, I can make the trip.
If our friends in Bangalore can take the initiative for the second S & B meeting, it will be great. That city is chosen because there are Shuchi, Vinod and Kishore besides Deepak there and Veer and Richard have said they can make it.

Right! The word "express" (adj.) means 'definite' as in "I got express approval from my boss for a sudden out-of-country trip from my work."
In the clue the word has 'false capitalisation' - which is allowed in clue-writing.

  11. 2nd S&B meet on Sun 28th looks good. We could meet at my house, plenty of space available on my terace, food can be ordered from outside so no need to go elsewhere for the lunch. I am proposing lunch rather than dinner so that people from out of Bangalore can get in on Sun morning and leave in the evening, no requirement of a night halt, but if everyone is okay with 27th night, it's okay with me as well.

ZAMBIA is not linked with ZIMBABWE/RHODESIA other than being it's neighbor, if my History-Geography is correct!!

  13. 26a, Sir, from my side, for the S&B on either day. Please let me know how I can help to organise it.

  14. Deepak, this is what I found on the internet.

    -----

    Rho·de·sia (rō-dēˈzhə)

    1. A region of south-central Africa south of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and comprising modern-day Zambia and Zimbabwe. Probably inhabited since ancient times, it was formerly administered by the British South Africa Company.

  15. Re proposed S&B meet II in Bangalore

I have a wedding to attend in Bangalore on November 24. I had plans to drive back on 25th. Now I may have to stay on until 28th or make another trip to reach back on the day. In either case, I'm game. Please count my head. (No head-hunting, this. I still need it for future use.)

  16. Suresh, I know you are a busy person. But I presume you have a sister living in Bangalore. Perhaps you too can join in at the S&B meet as a pretext. :-)

If I am not mistaken, Chaturvasi too has a sister residing in the Garden City.

  17. 28th Nov meeting followed by lunch looks good.

Since most persons seem to be agreed on this, I suggest that the date be fixed and an announcement made so that those interested can sign in.

As Deepak suggested this is convenient for those of us who come there from other cities like Chennai so that no overnight stay is involved.

I don't have any near-relative living in BNG. It will be a special trip like the one Deepak did for S&B I.

  18. I am planning to be in Bangalore immediately after Deepavali for a week or 10 days. Let me see if it is possible to postpone be a few days.

  19. Oh, OK, Chaturvasi. I don't know why I had this impression. Maybe because once you had mentioned about Kannada being spoken at home.

Suresh, it would be nice if you could do that.

  20. Oops! Just remembered that an friend from student days is coming to Vizag on 28 Nov all the way from Rajapalayam.

So I will be missing this meet too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. CV, if you so desire, please let me know your itinerary when fixed, and I would be more than glad to pick you (and any others who come with you) up and drop you back as may be necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I will attend definitely (if second time participation is allowed), this time just to meet the additional 3 most admired people of this Forum - Shuchi, Kishore and Richard.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So that's 6 so far (Veer, CV, Kishore, Richard, Dr DS & Self), Shuchi & Vinod are yet to respond, being local however we can always convince them to attend
