  1. Hi

ASHES my cod, in spite of my dislike of cricket !

ROGER reminded me of other radio responses: The US version ‘Copy’ and my favourite ‘Wilco’ (an abbreviation for Will Comply, which indicates compliance in addition to mere acknowledgment. Also, reminded me of a favourite dodge of some people: Feigning radio malfunction when ordered to do something the recipient does not want to comply with. Though this does amount to technical ‘indiscipline’, it is usually given a Nelson’s eye if the result of the disobedience is favourable in the overall scenario, though sometimes individually conclusive.

    BTW, Veer stars in 11a.
Hoping it is a printer’s devil and thankful that it did not become ‘tyred’ instead of ‘tires’.

  2. 4D should be ASHES not ACHES

  3. Kishore,
Your COD could be ACHES as well as it's a CD.

  4. 4 - The result of playing matches? (5) - ACHES [CD]

Deepak, I took it as Ashes, the cricket trophy which is won after playing matches. Maybe I was influenced partly by the immediate previous clue with resulting in another arson-ic answer SET ALIGHT, so I interpreted matches in two ways, matchstick and cricket match, though it is clear that it is not playing with matches.

  5. Suresh,

Why can't it be ACHES, it's a CD after all ?

  6. Repeating today's early morning response to Deepak's query from yesterday:
    "
    Deepak,
I am just trying to improve my knowledge of aircraft and flying by soliciting any aviator/s who just might land here ..
    "
Additionally learnt that Red Bull team is also here. Though I used to regularly attend Air shows right from the first, I stopped going, traffic being one of the problems. The other being, that the last day I visited (in 2007), Sqn Ldr Baldev Singh had an accident and the IAF commentator was so flabbergasted that he used a four letter word on the PA system !
Baldev had another undercarriage problem in 2009 too.

On the occasion of 50 years of IAF, there was an air show over Agaram grounds and the previous day an Iskra had crashed, killing the pilot.

Do not want to witness further disasters, whether by accident or negligence.

  7. I am 'veer'ing towards Deepak's interpretation of 4d

  8. Hard to imagine a seriousnik like myself can inadvertantly be cause for a chuckle here and there. Honestly, I thought today's crossword would be panned more than has happened here.

IT has a full complement of the murderer's row I thought: poor CD (aches/ashes), wrong enu. (muskrat), indirect anagram (responded), undefined solution with no reasonable surface (theresa), typos (?, tired), none regulation NJ clue (adapt), unclear spelling (sibyl or Sybil, I am "veer"ing to the latter which makes the clue defective), gratis words in clue (tarGETS), some gratuitous padding or dodgy def. again (stain). Given all this, I was giving concentrate as a def. for address a pass.

  9. Pls. read "one regulation NJ clue" for none regulation NJ clue..

  10. I am 'veer'ing towards ASHES after filling in ACHES! Agree with Veer that there are a lot of 'ifs' today and it is a mixed bag with some good ones too.

  11. Deepak, It must be ASHES. Ashes is the result of lighting matches

  12. I suppose it is a vague attempt at a D&CD. 'The Ashes' trophy is the result of playing matches, ie the winning team gets it. The second meaning is explicit. MM has possibly missed the trick of the article 'THE" in the first explanation.

  18. Thanks Kishore. So 'to be ' is AInd for both the above clues :)

  20. The link BATE has not led me to blunt. Am I missing something here.

  21. Hi Muthaiah,
I saw both blunt and bate/abate are synonymous with weaken.

A positive smell is better than a negative one.

If COD is defined as the clue that attracts most comment during the day, the it is ASHES or ACHES

  23. How could I miss EIDERDOWN, I had just learnt about EIDER and EIDERDOWN sometime in the past week, thanks to EIDER appearing in one of Manna's grids (or was it one of Gridman's?)!

What's enumeration in a CW context? 5A was indeed a good one.

  24. Navneeth
Enumeration (we in the Orkut community use the abbr. 'enu') is the number within brackets at the end of a clue.
To answer your query: I checked my dB of words in more than 600 crosswords of Gridman and surprisingly he has never had EIDERDOWN ! He did use the word as part of a clue for another word.

  25. Thanks on both counts, Chaturvasi. It was indeed a Manna grid that I was thinking of. Feb 3 2011, the one with the many ducks.
