  1. Hi,
Rather rum that Gita and RISHI, the two persons who self-avowedly have sworn off NJ CWs turn up in today’s CW.

    14d required Google.

  2. Col,
    10 - Tyrannical leader of the French kitty (6) - {DE}{SPOT} Kitty & Spot !
    (DES)(POT)

NJ mentions RISHI (2D)& GITA (28A). ? Tribute to CV & his wife.

  3. 10 - Tyrannical leader of the French kitty (6) - {DE}{SPOT} Kitty & Spot !

    I think it is {DES}{POT}

  4. 10 - Tyrannical leader of the French kitty (6) - {DE}{SPOT} Kitty & Spot !

I think it is DES POT. Pot in games of chance is the kitty.

  5. 17A R E T probably are the product of Tre, which should somehow mean three.

24D may be EAST sounding like yeast with no homophone indicator

  6. 8 - Not reflecting light on the ring surface, overhead (5) - MATTE(~mat)

Should have been overheard, I think. With overhead, it was over my head.

  7. 24 - All in the recipe direction (4) - NETT ? Anno pending

All in(clusive) is Nett. Fine up to here.

    Suresh, East clashes with Linesman.

  8. Suresh,
If it is East then what is your solution for 26A

  9. Hilarious 4d cartoon of an UNCLEAR* family.

  10. Oops! I did not fill in the word and was only imagining. Yeah cannot be east. Maybe WEST for direction, but cannot see it fitting in a recipe

  11. Any guesses on what 'on the ring surface' in 8D is trying to depict?

    ReplyDelete
  12. How about RECT (T) with a mispelt recipe for receipt. Driving us up the wall as usual

    ReplyDelete
  13. In recipes we probably have directions such as "Take maida 200g nett., aloo 100g nett., salt to taste, oil (to fry)"
Is the setter merely alluding to it without any wordplay component by component?

    ReplyDelete
  14. A ring may be 'studded' or it may be merely machine-made with its surface dull. Maybe the setter means this by 'on the ring surface', whether on it it was a leader or a master who stood.

  15. Recipe itself is a type of 'direction' so what is 'recipe direction'

    ReplyDelete
  16. Kishore @ 8:40

    Isn't that 'Gross'?

  17. Deepak,

Recipe direction may be a type of direction used in recipes, like baste, blanch etc.

When I quote an all inclusive price, the term nett or worse nett nett is used by some.

  18. The word is BEAT (DD) meaning Al in and a direction in a recipe

  19. Any guesses on what 'on the ring surface' in 8D is trying to depict?

the mat on the surface of the wrestling ring

  20. Typo in my post. Shd be all in not al in

    ReplyDelete
  21. I go with Kishore on the guess on MATTE

    ReplyDelete
  22. Right, Suresh, BEAT seems to fill the bit / fit the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Suresh
You've BEAT all in that direction.

  24. How far is Ijsselmeer from Jaislamer?

  25. All in the recipe direction (4)
    Good one.
Could have done with a little rethink (but "I am quite overloaded with work") or editing (none to do it?). E.g.,
All in a recipe direction (4)
This makes perhaps for a better surface reading but is certainly more plausible. BEAT is only one of several directions in recipes such as add, mix, whisk, etc.

  26. 11D for a change NJ has used 'determination' the correct way. Got me foxed for a while

  27. 25 A & 17 A are to be correlated - If 25 is accepted, 17 is answered

    ReplyDelete
  28. TER, I think is a latin word for thrice.

  29. Hi i am here after a long time for commenting though I usually check late night after doing my crossword later in the day. I see NJ in her usual form but today she is several shades better.I was wondering if with new setters like cryptonyte and spiffytrix have NJs crosswords hopefully reduced. And did read NJs interview yesterday and was chuckling out aloud. Sorry could not help. any views?

  30. Nobody has voted this crossword as 'Poor' That is an improvement

    ReplyDelete
  31. Can someone please explain this again -
Not reflecting light on the ring surface, overhead (5) - MATTE(~mat)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Excursionist,

The last letter in the clue is a typo, it should be 'overheard' which is a homophone indicator. So 'MAT' becomes 'MATTE'
