  2. 28A a real faux pas. I did not get the answer. I also did not get 23D. I wrote Resin and that did not help. Not a clue I liked because it could lead to multiple answers.

  3. Deepak, liked your illustration for Mummy Longlegs !

  4. An interesting trivia - "frostwind" is another anagram that fits in 26A; had that initially and went awry.

  5. Boxed myself into the SW corner by filling frostwind and earnest.

  6. SW corner botched up thanks to my 'earnest' belief!

  7. Is it right for anagrams to depend on crossings in a cryptic CW?

    1. Not sure about this in general. But at least in this case "frostwind", though it seemed right to me, does not exist in the dictionary. Also the term "wind frost" exists as two words. So I guess the only word that fits is snowdrift.

    2. I think they are called cognate anagrams. We had a discussion on this forum about two years ago.

      1. Tree producing fir cone (7)
      2. New Orleans in Italy (7)
      3. Supersonic instruments (10)
      4. Soldiers armed with guns? (9)
      5. Noiseless wild animals (9)
      6. The raffia-weaving business (6)
      7. They are used for duplicating clients' letters (8)
      8. Indicatory anagram book (8)

No. 7 may be found outdated. With some of the quickest solvers around, I wouldn't be surprised to get answers within seconds.

Suresh will sure call me names.

    4. Quite likely. I am no expert, sir. I just copied them from sources.

  8. My religious knowledge helped in getting THERESA at first glance. Also got the following among others, though I did not complete the cw.

    Liked 29A - HINTS AT

20D - Nice play with the names of British political parties.

  9. Solutions: 1 CONIFER; 2 SALERNO; 3 PERCUSSION; 4 GUARDSMEN; 5 LIONESSES; 6 AFFAIR; 7 STENCILS; 8 DICTIONARY
Richard, For 8, the lettes should have been (10).

  10. Suresh,
Richard has correctly given enu of 7 as 8.
'They' for the required definition indicates a plural word.
    CLIENTS' stands for CLIENTS'S
Anagram of this gives STENCILS (they are used for duplicating).
