  2. Cartoon illustrates the elastic limit when without support...

    If we do not get an answer, sometimes seeing the answer grid for yesterday's quickie helps. Eg:

    13 - Go flat with Deutsch song (4) - LIED {LIE}{D}

    This word came as 25a German song in yesterday's Guardian Quick 10784, for which the answer is published today.

    10 - Soldier, therefore, began lifting the umbrella (7) - PARASOL
    Reminded of the parachute joke.

  4. Quite a pedestrian CW. The excessive use of CD/E type clues (6 is what I counted) and charade clues for 4/5 letter words don't make for a pleasant experience in solving a cryptic CW.
