  1. Hello all

An EXTRAORDINARY day of church, church officials, long words and long sets of words.

Liked ACETYLENE, MASTER-AT-ARMS, UNDERGARMENT (the word, I mean), DIESEL ENGINES and others.

16D - Just a passing reference and not a complaint. The use of words mutiny and mutineers with reference to the 1857 military unrest is discouraged in modern history. It is being referred to as the first freedom fight.

    2. Thanks, forgot to put that in. It's not an anagram the anno is REINED<-

    3. I was about to change the anno when you put it.

    1. Neyartha usually goes in for themes. But today the ref. to churches are only 5/6 to call it a theme.

  5. For 27 Is it 'letter' or 'setter' who is sent out?
em = m is what is sent out. Of course one could have sent out en or es and got into a lot of trouble

  6. Had trouble with the SW grid today. Managed to pick Neyartha's substitution clues today ( usually that is the type of clue that I struggle with ). Needed net for denier & duckpin.

Today's ABCDE (A bonus clue dealt everyday)

Sister perhaps gathering a follower for Supreme Court (6)

  7. "27 - Letter sent out after composing symphonies in a state of trance (8) - HYPNOSIS SYmPHONIeS* Is it 'letter' or 'setter' who is sent out?"

LOL!! Prolly the setter didn't have the heart to send himself out even if he wanted to.

    1. I think Col. is right. It should be Setter and not Letter. Then this is my COD. Otherwise 23A is my cod.

  8. 18 - Charged after losing opener and got mixed-up (6) - ADDLED {ADD{L}ED}

I am not clear with the Anno given. Losing opener is L. Does ADDED mean CHARGED? As per the clue synonym of CHARGED to follow L.

I took it this way. (-p)ADDLED. but not sure whether PADDLE means CHARGE also.

    1. (-s)ADDLED looks correct anno. As SADDLE also means charge

    2. I took it as saddled :) which can mean charged

  9. Letter sent out after composing symphonies in a state of trance (8) - HYPNOSIS SYmPHONIeS*

    HYPNOSIS{-em}*

First, composing symphonies to anagram symphonies
After that, letter is sent out.

EM is standard substitution for letter in crossword parlance

  10. Attempted a Neyartha crossword after a long time. Quite a challenge!

    Hi Ganesh,

EM = the letter M and therefore it is standard substitution for 'letter' - so far so good. In this clue though, I think it is stretching it to expect the solver to sort the letters, put E+M together and then delete it based on 'letter' alone. Why EM, why not EN or ESS?

    What do others think?

    1. Oh! We were quite happy with our PRINTO, RIGHTO explanation till now.

Now we have a new dimension and I agree with Suchi on this. If E and M were appearing together in the word, still okay.

But what the hell. We are in a more liberal world and it is a weekend. Also Ganesh visarjan. I don't want to quibble.

Keep up the good work, Ganesh.

  11. I would consider it an acceptable clue ( Dead purists would roll in their graves, the live ones will probably roll their eyes ). The number of combinations that one has to work out is still limited
Scramble of one of three - syphonis or symphois or symphoni to mean 'in a state of trance'. I think this should be fairly straight forward for most solvers and therefore a fair enough clue.

  12. 3D my CoD. Could have done with a few more words for good measure

  13. 6 down clue left me clueless! inherent -> immanent

+ rep to give impermanent = brief

such clues really makes one humble and numb!
