    grains, (Wheat and Millet)
    beverages,(Cocoa and Coffee)

and all under the umbrella of 16a CROP

  2. I was able to do most of it and was beginning to be happy till I saw CV's byword that it is an easy CW. So my happiness was short lived! Enjoyed doing it anyway.
1A- That is why Sunnet probably said 'beginning to understand'.

  6. 27A Gur - The setter had intended the meaning as jaggery. But, can 'gur' be used as such for this purpose without referring to the Indian connotation.
The dictionary shows gur as a small group of languages of W Africa, spoken chiefly in Burkina-Faso and Ghana, forming a branch of the Niger-Congo family.

    2. Gur is there in OED as jaggery

    3. Can someone enlighten me on this: Isn't SUGARCANE good enough to be &lit also?

Many argue that Cacao is the original name and Cocoa is a corruption.

    4. Just noticed that Sunnet mentioned &Lit at 3:32.

  7. 1A : From The Free Dictionary
    2. To come to understand. Often used with to or onto.
Since Often != Always, So went with cotton = begin to understand

27A : Gur can somewhat easily be manufactured from this grass(9) .
Sowewhat easily = eas was not an obvious derivation, but went with it as the clue yielded something close to an &lit

The theme was crops as Kishore has noted. Sugarcane can also be added to the list

THE CW was a pangram as well.
