No.11091, Thursday 22 May 2014, From the files of Sankalak

Lot of clues to like - ÉTUDE, SAN MARINO, TARTAN, DEBIT, ACTIN, BEARER, SNOWBOUND, TENNIS MATCHES, OBITUARY, ENDANGER, OBJECT, BROOK, DRAMBUIE and ENGAGE. That looks like more or less all clues. 2d and 3d brought a sense of loss briefly when I was solving, but the rest of the puzzle cheered me up and reminded of all the good times. Thank you Sankalak.

    1. Losing files is extremely dangerous: somebody may find them ! Burning is safer. What is not burnt fully will be doused to oblivion by the Fire Brigade ...

    1. This Coco is different, Richard ;-) The Col.'s Cocoa has a as a tail.

There are a couple of Coco's involved in music according to Wiki, but it was the (Bobby) Darin in the clue that got me. He was no Bobby Darling ;-)

    9. Where are those Bollywood starlets, who were mere flashes in the pan by passing briefly across the silver canvas, like Kimi Katkar, Mamta Kulkarni, Faryal, Leena Das and a number of others?

Histrionics or no histrionics, at least Komilla had quite a good number of movies to her credit, most of them best forgotten.

Remembered the cover splash of 'Diwana' monthly - an Indian clone of MAD magazine - in mid-1970s, screaming - 'No Wirk? Here's Komilla for you!'

She has reportedly settled in London.

  6. A doubt about 23D-
How does one get 'ENE' ?
Immensely enjoyable and satisfying CW. How to thank except remember him? (which,of course all of us anyway do whenever we do a CW)
    Sad for missing okapi.

  7. Nice cartoon by Rishi. I always had the doubt- how much you can see and enjoy on such 'conducted' tours?

    1. +1

In all such tours, since you have already paid the money, cutting short things works in favour of the operator. For example, in Tirupathi tours from B'lore, Sri Kalahasti and Mangapuram are included and paid for. After the early morning rise and the waiting/queue at Tirumala, the guide usually says, "it is quite hot at SK. Do you all really want to go there? Or shall we return" Invariably the answer is "go back" and he has not only managed to save some expense for his company but also managed to finish his task earlier.

    2. Even the visits to places are so brief and hurried that one can hardly do any justice.

      Delete
    3. On the other hand, there is always a person or group who finish the 'sight'/'site' half an hour later than budgeted, holding up everyone else and indirectly helping the conductor in dropping a location.

  8. For those who missed. Pl. see yesterday's post by Richard- a touching account of an air crash and its aftermath very ably written by Richard.

  9. What a surface reading for all clues! Centum today that too under 75 minutes :))). Thanks to whom?:(

  10. Regarding today's accordion sketch: I noticed something odd when I kept the image in the middle of my screen and scrolled up and down using the mouse wheel. Due to the radial lines being shifted, it causes an optical illusion of the accordion being pumped/expanded. Try it!

    6. Management advice

You have to blow your trumpet because nobody else will do it for you. The skill with which you blow it will determine whether it makes music for the ears or noise.

Since I was out for quite a while, till May 15, I am not aware of why THC has shrunk. Could someone enlighten me? This is probably why they could not fit 'From the files ...' yesterday.
