A great debut, and has the hand of someone who regularly sets. Maybe writing clues in some online forum like 1AC? Loved 15A, such an elegant clue, and there were quite a few others.

My usual grouse is that 'first xyz' is used to indicate first letter. Have always felt that this is not grammatically correct, should be first of xyz. But a minor point as it did not hinder solving in any way

  36. Re:

    4 Barbie, perhaps, had to wear badge at game (9) DODGEBALL {DO(DGEBA*)LL}

General question: When A 'wears' B, is A outside B or inside B?
Particular question: In the above clue which is the anagrind for 'badge'?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, to wear (synonym damage, erode, etc) is the anagrind and had is the container indicator... So, the cryptic reading is Doll contained (had) badge* (to wear) Hope that clarifies...?
BTW, a big thanks to you for your blog that detailed how to create a grid, numbering, etc... very helpful...

      Delete
    2. To your general question, when A wears B, I would take it to be A contained in B.

      Delete
    3. My 2 cents worth on this: The main reason that prompts the query from CV is that there is a grammatical inconsistency, and therefore doubt arises on which is the container ind and anagrind. When using 'had', it would have been much cleaner if it had been followed by 'worn' instead of 'to wear'. Same wordplay would be there, plus grammar taken care of. Further 'at' as the link word also is iffy. Might have been better to use 'for'. The whole clue would become much more coherent. Just my suggestions, there are other possibilities

      Delete
    4. Thank you very much... Both your suggestions do seem to make the clue cleaner...

I have seen One Across website in the past.
But does it have a forum where one submits crosswords/clues?
Can't find it. Could anyone give me a pointer?

    1. Yes, Sowmya moderates it, but anyone that is part of that group can submit single crossword clues... typically no grid submissions though... It is on Facebook, if you are on facebook, maybe sowmya could send you an invite.

  39. Great debut Bruno /Balaji :) Well done and we look forward to more grids from you:) Bhala - thanks for the intro to 1 ACross, in this group. CV sir, as noted by Ajeesh, you were one of the first people I invited to the group (despite fully knowing that you are an infrequent visitor to FB). For others, it is a closed Facebook group for seasoned crossword buffs and setters. Many of the current members are either Setters for the Hindu and other publications or fantastic crossword solvers I have met at CCS and/or THCC. It is less than a week old and currently has 50 members. We are quite selective on membership and the focus is on quality cluing while having fun with other cruciverbalists. If any setters or seasoned solvers here would like to join, please let us know and we would be happy to send an invitation. It is moderated by me, Lakshmi (Saral) and Martin D''Mello, who is an ex IITian and an amazing crossword setter and solver.
