Probably TUCK SHOP from TUCKS HIP

    1. TUCK = Thrust and replace O for I in hip

    2. I go with Raghu. "..A tuck shop is a small, food-selling retailer.[1] It is a term principally used in the UK. " Source - Wiki

    3. In that case 5D could be THUD meaning dull noise!?

      Delete
    4. Then 5D could be CLOP! Far fetched from surface reading!

    1. But Neigh does not sound like nigh? More like nay

    2. You are right, but according to Cambridge dict, there seem to be 2 diif ways to pronounce it. Check the 1st pronunciation at this site:

      http://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/british/neigh

      Delete
    3. None of the four accents give nigh in that site.

    4. @Raghunath: There is a slight variation :P

    5. That's the problem with homophone clues. One should be absolutely sure of the pronunciation

  4. 4 UK's split? Cede grounds without harm (4,4) SCOT FREE [DD]

    I think this is:

    UK's split = SCOTLAND'S FREE - LANDS (grounds)

  5. 25 Killer with cheek to hide an offence (8) ASSASSIN {A}{S{SASS}IN}

Somebody, please explain how this container/containment indicator work.

    1. Maybe it should been "on the contrary" after offence.

      Delete
    2. Will it be right here to say " an offence without cheek" - meaning a sin is outside 'cheek'. I always get tripped when coming across such clues (in stead of saying 'cheek' is within)

  6. No.of comments indicate that the World Cup is over- at least as far as India is concerned! Back to the board.

    25 Three perfect scores — so, Tamil Nadu has good relations with other states (7) ENTENTE {tEN}{TEN}{TEn}

What's the deletion ind for T N pl?

    1. MB,
I do not think it is deletion- TN contains 'Entente' giving 3 perfect scores.

      Delete
    2. In that case, 'Three perfect scores' becomes the def.

      Delete
    3. Thanks Paddy. I missed the containment ind 'has'. So it's Tamil Nadu has...etc!

      Delete
    4. If you want a deletion take - (minus ) :-)

      Delete
    5. I am inclined to feel that a deletion indicator for TN is required. As Ajeesh said - could be it, except that the word following is 'so' But then 'so' in baseball means strikeout. So could be the deletion indicator.

    6. Feel both Ajeesh and Suresh garu are correct.

      Delete
    7. Paddy too is right if "Three perfect scores" is treated as definition and the answer part carries 9 instead of 7 as enumeration!

      Delete
    8. Three perfect scores - Ten ten ten
TN - Tamil Nadu. Has- cont. ind. Good relations with other states: Def- Entente

  11. A few clarifications: 2D: NIGHT is the homophone of KNIGHT (horse, in chess). 'Bird' is rhyming slang for TIME, a prison sentence.

25A, The wordplay works if we imagine a comma: 'With/having SASS to hide, A SIN'. Agree it is ambiguous though.

The theme is of trains: RAIL, CHUG, BALLAST, BOGEY and a few more.
