  1. First off, we would have appreciated an author intro. For, we don't seem to have read any Comment by this person if he had been a member of this blog all these years. I don't mean to say any member should have necessarily participated by making Comments (anyone can indeed be a happy lurker) but when someone emerges from the shadows, we are curious to know who he is.

  29. Can the solver/anyone parse UMBRAGE, please.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is what the setter intended

      Absurd = Anagram indicator
      vagrant = BUM
      tantrum = RAG
      causes offence = Definition = {UMB}*{RAGE}

      Delete
    2. {UMB}*{RAGE} Absurd being anind for BUM a vagrant

      Delete
    3. This is what I had parsed. Should I have been clearer?

      Delete
    4. You had indicated it all right. It is just that I did not see that we had to derive BUM, the anag fodder, from 'vagrant'.
That is exactly the reason why indirect anagrams are frowned upon. You have to find the anag fodder first before you jumble the letters.

  30. A marvelous debut puzzle. Enjoyed thoroughly. Thank you Doctor.

  32. Ty guys. Have joined here very recently. So have been content to just watch and learn. I have been setting Cryptic clues as a passionate hobby for several years. When I got in touch with Col. Gopinath he advised me to set up a grid, and that was a whole different ball game! Since then I have set up many more grids which I have sent to Col. Gopinath. It would be an honour to be published here again as and when opportunity arises. Thank you for all the feedback and corrections suggested. It can only help me to get better. Thank you for taking time out to solve. :)

  33. My reactions
    ACROSS
1 Strong desire to hit, a means of protest? (6, 6) HUNGER STRIKE
    ***A neat charade.
10 Pertains to one invested in fruits (7) APPLIES
***Neat c/c. Good inserticator. What was invested? One rupee? Or did a woman cover herself fully in just fruits. Cho chweet!
11 Absurd vagrant tantrum causes offence (7) UMBRAGE
***UMB (anag. of BUM) RAGE - Indirect anagram. Indirect anagams aregenerally frowned upon though some setters occasional use them.
12 Assault rifle back to rock within this country (5) KOREA
***Rev plus c/c. rock is v. in surface reading and n. as content. But rifles 'rocking'? It is a mad, mad world.
13 Revolutionary internet ruler perhaps talking impertinently (8) CHEEKING
***Good charade. A rare verbal use of 'cheek'.
15 Avoid cunning ploy (5) DODGE
    ***Neat DD
16 Express confusion after we meet exploiter (4) USER
*** Cha US ERNot sure if we = us
17 Put up with display (4) BEAR
***DD. When you 'bear something' you display it, I suppose.
19 Religious leader to proclaim a miracle (4) IMAM
*** &lit? WP: I'm a ... The proclamation does not seem to come out quite neatly.
21 Expressions of delight backfiring to frighten one away (4) SHOO
***Good rev ind to suit context.
22 Wear this on your head to welcome injection (5) HIJAB
***OK. Tomorrow I have to go for an injection and I shall look for this wear. Not sure if it will help.
24 Substance causing inflammation, a source of annoyance (8) IRRITANT
    *** DD OK
26 Foot lever to provide handicapped a legitimate alternative (5) PEDAL
    ***Meaningful telescopic
    28 See 30 Across
29 A long step to show way to sit on a horse (7)
    30 and 28 I am a flirt! A sex rat far slyly having these (12, 7)
***I am confused. Will someone give anagram fooder and anagram of this clue and relieve me? One is at one time a miracle man and at another time hmmm.
    (DOWN later)

    1. Anagram fodder: I am a flirt a sex rat far
      Anind is slyly I suppose
Its an & LIT, the whole clue is the definition

    2. Extramarital Affairs is the solutions

      Delete
    3. Another careless oversight.
29 A long step to show way to sit on a horse (7) ASTRIDE
cha A STRIDE I would expect 'the' before 'way', perhaps.

  34. Thank us for solving?!
We should thank you for keeping us occupied (on a 'No paper' day) in a wonderful enjoyable way. Superb offering. looking forward to more in future.

  35. DOWN
The first four are all concise.
2 Made many calls? (7) UMPIRED
*** OK. But rather vague unless you are a sports enthusiast? May require some crossings before the actual solution determined.
3 Frowns at austere experts (8) GRIMACES
    ***Neat DD
4 Woke up and rebelled (4) ROSE
*** That's why we say 'let sleeing dogs lie'. Some setters maya void using thes ame clue type in two consecutive instances.
    5 Plant celibate philosophy (5-2-3) TOUCH-ME-NOT
***Plant where? In the minds of young men and women? Heaven forbid. In China now they want people to have the second child! Let the roll in bed.
6 Inculcate what’s revealed by slim Buenos Aires lady (5)
***Neat telescopic though 'Aires lady' is redundant.
    7 Study separated protein (7)
***Good cha avoiding former wives and pits.
8 Careless not to have this flower, I hear in California (13) LACKADAISICAL
***OK but this homophone cum cha is not too smooth. The'in' appears to be intrusive, though needed for the surface.
9 Mendicant’s opinion too extraordinary to be plausible (7, 6) BEGGARS BELIEF
    ***Neat DD. Good surface.
14 Auntie has a convulsion, is allowed to go away painlessly (10) EUTHANASIA
***I think there is a PoS problemm here. The sol is a n. but the def does not appear to lead to a n. Also, the nounal anagrid may not be liked by some. 'is allowed to go away' is rather a verbose anagrind. A doctor must be a healer!!!
18 It is returned after tea is served with piece of this food (8) CHAPATTI
***CHA from tea, TI from the return of 'it', how do we get PAT?
    20 A small amount of a dessert (1, 6) A TRIFLE
***From the dangling A, this seems to be a fix after having been driven into a corner while gridfilling. The second 'a' in the def part of the clue perhaps helps the solver in filling in A in the slot.
23 Firstly just understand discipline and inherent culture attracting Jewish life and customs (7) JUDAIC
    ***A well-managed acrostic.
25 Distort change in plot (5) TWIST
    ***Concise DD.
    27 Deranged singer (4)
    ***-do-

  37. Welcome aboard, Dr Nabar. Your entry is all the more welcome because the Col is always on the lookout for more compilers to fill up his Bank. There are so many silent fans of this blog who remain in the closet and this blog attracts to ferret them out.
I liked particularly TOUCH ME NOT with allusion to a plant and a bachelor .. Will I be CHEEKING ( very seldom used word, as opposed to cheeky or cheekily !) if I say that all bachelors are not touch me nots !

LACKADAISICAL was well crafted.; So was EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS !! Though the parsing looks a bit complicated, these were the first ones I cracked., as is my wont to tackle longer words or phrases.

Well done and keep sending to this blog your efforts .

Late entry by me as I was out the whole day visiting for diwali. Hope you see this.
