  33. My query is a little unrelated. In the Guardian Quick CW that appeared in TH on April 13, a clue was 23 and the answer, EIGHT. How do we explain this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If I remember right the clue was 2 to the power of 3 = 2*2*2= 8- simple arithmetic. Such clues can get away in Quick CW's.

      Delete
    2. I don't solve the Guardian Quick crossword but I remember having seen this particular crossword and also having read the clue. I didn't find the answer but if I remember right the clue was printed merely as 23 - I rose from the computer chair and took the trouble of finding the old issue - yes, it is prinited as 23. There was no superscript. In which case we just can't get the answer EIGHT.
BTW, the Guardian Quick crossword as printed in TH does not hold any more charm to me as the papers eeems to have reduced the type size and I can't read the clues easily.

    3. Cv,
It is better these days- readble. But anyway, this clue was supposed to be 2 cubed and it came out right in the on line edition.

      Delete
  34. Just checked up- the print edition shows it as 23- obviously unable (?) to print 2 cubed! On line version was clear.

    1. Does TH offer the Guardian quick crossword online? Paddy, did you solve it in the Guardian site itself?

      Delete
    2. Th does not offer. But we can go to Guardian site, put in one of the clues which will lead us to the particular CW ( or one mus follow the serial no. like Col. does for Sunday Cryptic) Thankfully, it comes serially all right. It is easier to solve there than on paper. We can even get the answe for some of the weird clues.

      Delete
    3. Thanks Paddy, for the tip! It works! Today's Guardian Quick CW no. 12116 was published on 13th Jan 2016 with serial no.14252. As you said, it is better to solve it on 'online!' :)

      Delete
    4. Once you know the sl no it is much easier to follow online! Tomorrow I'll simply mention sl no 14253 and solve it online.

  35. A simple question: why can't you solve the day's Quick crossword on the Guardian webnsite instead of locating the day's TH crossword there and solving it? I don't understand this sort of loyalty to the national paper. A sort of nationalism? Bharatmata ki Jai?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shall try your method too, Sir. Bharatmata ki Jai !

      Delete
    2. Some 'Unforced' Jai for Bharatmata!
As for CV's question on loyalty, it is just some order. Of course we can do any one of Guardian quick or cryptic. When you get the day's paper you have an itch to do the CW. Only I found it easier to do it this way than on paper. I have been doing like this for a long time and find it easy. No occasion to talk about it. Probably we have to thank Prasad for starting it today.
