    1. I think 'mass' and 'acre' are clubbed together.

    2. Mrs. LV, your answer is right. But needs proper annotation.

    3. ...because I couldn't account for 'acre' it being a Brazilian territory. See comments by Raghu and Padmanabhan posts @ 1:15 and 1:16 pm

    1. I think of and are clubbed are redundant?

      Delete
    2. I don't think so, Ajeesh. It is difficult to draft a clue without proper linkages. In my view, it will like expecting a sentence without propositions, nouns and verbs!
      In this clue, "OF" is the inseparable connector between the two parts and "Clubbed in" is the indicator to join them.

      Delete
    3. I'd support Ajeesh. Of, for are not valid connectors between the fodder.

      Delete
    4. Though clubbed together is redundant it is OK I think but not 'of'. It doesn't work in cryptic grammar. You may have to look for a different surface.
      BTW Nice crossword. Danke

  23. Acre is a territory in Brazil- " Acre (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈakɾi]) is a state located in the northern region of Brazil"- as per wiki.
    So,
    Mass- common people
    Acre- Brazilian territory
    Clubbed together gives Massacre or bloodbath.

    3. @KKR sir I was not sure of the anno, though I got the answer.
      @Ramesh is " are clubbed " necessary ? Since common people near Brazilian territory leads to MASS ACRE .

      Delete
    4. Needed for surface & does not interfere in the cryptic reading

      Here is the cryptic reading I had in mind
      Common people= Mass
      Near = Positional indicator
      Brazilian Territory = Acre
      are clubbed in (Mass placed near Acre & joined together)
      BloodBath=Defn=Massacre

  27. Thanks, KKR Gaaru. Sorry, I couldn't participate earlier as our Residents Assn's AGM was on from 10 am and I could come back only now after 1730 hrs. Missed out on all the fun ! There was a full blown electiion for the EC and the voting results are yer to be announced . Enjoyed this crossie with unusual words like MYOGLOBINS & OMERTA and SKELETON WATCH to be added to my glossary. I will now go through the various comments.

    1. Thanks Rajugaru. Your residents' association seems to be taking the elections very seriously. Normally, people hate to take positions in them as they feel it is not important and extra burden on them.
