  4. For information sake:

The word "squaw" is an ethnic and sexual slur that is widely considered highly offensive, racist, and misogynistic. It is a derogatory term historically used to refer to Indigenous North American women, especially a wife.
    Origin and Usage
Etymology: The word comes from the Algonquian word squa, which simply means "woman" or "wife".
Derogatory Context: Over time, particularly from the 1800s onward, the term was adopted into English and used in a demeaning and dehumanizing way by non-Natives. It became associated with harmful stereotypes, often portraying Indigenous women as ignoble or a sexual convenience, in contrast to more romanticized "princess" stereotypes.
    Contemporary Status
The contemporary use of the term is considered unacceptable by most people and is actively avoided in respectful discourse.
Official Declarations: In 2021, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet official, formally declared "squaw" a derogatory term and established a task force to remove it from federal government use and rename geographic locations across the country.
Renaming Efforts: Numerous states (including Minnesota, Maine, Oklahoma, Idaho, South Dakota, and Oregon) have enacted laws to change place names containing the word.
Private Renaming: In 2020, the ski resort formerly known as "Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows" announced its decision to change its name, ultimately becoming Palisades Tahoe, due to the widely accepted understanding that the term is a racial and sexist slur.
Native American Perspective: Leaders from the Washoe Tribe, whose ancestral land includes the former resort area, have stated that the word is "a constant reminder of the unjust treatment" of their people and "a way to break us down and to devalue us".
Due to its deeply offensive connotations, the word is best left to history books and is not an appropriate term for modern use.
