    5. KRK: I don't get what you mean.
      PEEPAL is not a grid entry. Nor is it in the clue. "Tree, one might say" is a HP ind and the sound fetches 'people'. So it does not matter if it is peepul or peepal. The latter is a sp var in some dictionaries.

  6. Peepul=people. homophone. But in my opinion, people would mean people in general and family is specific to kinship. Hrnce, using people is more generic but family is specific. Wordplay is too far-fetched and does not please me !

    1. People is "a body of persons held together by common origin"(culture/race etc. Same for family. People in gen or ordinary people are referred as " the people". We, the people!!!

    Johns japes . Is there a need for an apostrophe as John's ? jzpes= tricks, but why John's ? Brevity is the soul of wit ?
