    1. You are right. I did not know ana. On checking, I got the meaning from Free dic.

  3. 14D- cheated to get WILY.
On working back, I could get IL from one learner.
    Wily is cunning/ designing.
    W from women.
But could not explain Y. From group? X & Y?

    1. I took group as YWCA=Y
Chambers supports this. Hope this is what GM desired.

    2. I thought X & Y chromosomes.

  4. HATs off GM!

  5. 12A- Is it short form of Solar?

    1. You are right, in the sense that it is incorrectly used as solar!
      Chambers has this meaning too:
A sun helmet made of sola pith (also, incorrectly, solar)

    2. Oh! Thank you, did not know that. I was also thinking it to be solar (to protect from sun)

  6. Racket over man caught in that place — city of siege (8)
Racket = ROW, man = KT (knight), that place = YON
ROW around KT, and in YON => YO(R(KT)OW)N

    2. Good one. Was stuck at Kt for knight.

    3. I could only go up to 'yon'...Beyond that it was ?????? all the way!

    4. I got yon(der) , row and k/n/m for man. Got town from surface. And since its gridman, man had to be KT. And peace.(continuing ref to style of setters).

  9. I miss usual GM. May be with the intention of making us walk independently in stead of hand-holding every time, he tried to wear a different hat.

    1. ....with ease. He can switch modes at the drop of a hat!

  10. Yorktown had me stumped. KT for man? Really?
Also, Bwana and Sunhat. Didn't get those.
Interesting to see Gridman spring a surprise!

    1. Man=Chessman, often found in crosswords

    2. Kt is the lowest title of a knight.

    3. I think Kt is symbol in American Chess system. The international chess system abbreviation is N.
Pawn is P in Am. System while there is no symbol in Int. System. So in American system if Pawn moves to e4 it is written as PK4 whereas in Int system it is written as e4. Similarly for Nf6 in international system, Americans would write KtB3

    4. Very interesting evolution. Kt belongs to descriptive notation in vogue till the algebraic notation came in. Since K was already alloyed for king, knight is kt. N is a relic of a fairy chess piece called NightRider. Surprised no setter has used S for knight.

  11. I did not know this difference in systems. Thank you. I will look out. Probably Americans in chess faded out after Bobby Fischer.

    1. Yes. Till date there have been only a few American Chess players. Paul Morphy, the 19th century genius, Marshall(famous for the Marshal attack) & of course Robert Fisher.

    2. I should have said only a few famous American Chess players.

    3. Nowadays I seem to forget my openings. Marshal attack is in the Ruy Lopez opening 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bb5..
