15AC DE[-s]CRY
ReplyDelete15a descry -s
ReplyDeleteStruggled to get annos, though I was able to fill in with crossings.
ReplyDeleteBlog cleared many doubts.
+1. I got the answers first and then fixed the annos in four cases.
Delete'descry' means 'to catch sight of; discern". The first time I came across this was in Milton's Paradise Lost when I was in college.
ReplyDelete'sere' I met when I was in school. In Ben Jonson's poem
It is not growing like a tree
In bulk doth make Man better be;
Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
A lily of a day Is fairer far in May,
Although it fall and die that night—
It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measures life may perfect be.
I traced Milton's use of the word 'descry"
ReplyDelete'Through optic glass the Tuscan artist views
At evening, from the top of Fesole,
Or in Valdarno, to descry new lands,
Rivers, or mountains, in her spotty globe."
The Tuscan artist is Galileo.
6d meeting:tie. Nine(tie)th
ReplyDeleteKKR ji, the whole thread got deleted.
No issue, I thought and wished so.
DeletePlease explain how 'meeting' = 'tie'.
DeleteMeeting noun
Deletean organized event at which a number of races or other sporting contests are held.
"an athletics meeting"
synonyms: event, meet, rally, competition, match, game, contest
"an athletics meeting"
Tie
DeleteBRITISH
a sports match between two or more players or teams in which the winners proceed to the next round of the competition.
"Swindon Town have won themselves a third round tie against Oldham"
synonyms: contest, fixture, match, game, event, trial, test, test match, meeting
In sport, meeting of two teams is a tie between them (not necessarily scores being level)
ReplyDelete(eg) A tie between CSK amd MI is worth watching.
Thank you CV for the nice quotes.
