DeletePlease don't take it as nit picking Ravi. Your answers were perfect. But we have to respect the setters who frame the clues cleverly with no redundancy of words. Solving will be complete only with correct annotations.
DeletePS: Definition part should be given against the Answer rather than saying 'which is the clue'.

fly by night meaning unreliable. second part is cryptic definition.
ReplyDelete+1.
ReplyDeleteFly-by-night in first degree arises from the old witches flying in the night legend. Someone who flies away from day responsibilities.
Airlines prefer night flights because, noise all-around both audio-visual distractions are less. Passengers are eager to return home so turn-around times are less.
And most importantly Business class travellers prefer night flights.
It's a D&Cd.
ReplyDeleteFirst def is fly-by-night dictionary meaning unreleable.
Second one as Jacob says is cryptic. Airlines preferred time!
They prefer to fly by night.
1D - scram
ReplyDeleteScam - racket
R - Republican
R involved in scam
Sc(r)am
21D - aside
Aide - right hand man
S - small sops
A(s)ide
I took it as a DD- both being def.'s.
ReplyDeleteFly by night as unreliable arises from establishments which vanish overnight- not a steady dependable one.
Unreliable/ airline's preferred.....
ReplyDeleteYour first solution was just fly by night= unreliable. No mention of the other part.
ReplyDeleteCol.'s picture shows lime & spoon. For a while, I was wondering how yo fit in a lime in only 3 slots!
