  2. Yes indeed. French open is really a test of endurance as was brought out yesterday by Alcaraz (said to be a heir apparent to Nadal) cramping and limping through his match against Djokovic.

  3. Thank you Lightning for an enjoyable French open special. Nicely done.

  4. A doubt about 5A- Is fame= celebrity? Isn't celebrity a person having fame?

  5. I recently learned that Roland Garros- venue of French Open- is named after a French pilot of the I world war. His quote- "Victory belongs to the most tenacious" adorns the panels of the arena.

  6. 13A UN is A in French. Reference list is misleading - probably a typo-A is missing. Am I right?

  9. I am a "L". Can someone explain the second part of "America cutting first break perhaps in time to make payment (6) USANCE {US}{dANCE}"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. America = US
      cutting = Deletion indicator
      first = Indication to take first letter
      break perhaps = Refers to Break DANCE
      in time to make payment = Defintion = {US}{(-d)ANCE} = USANCE

  10. Please explain this as well "Wandering leader spans cross country for starters (7) NOMADIC {NO 1} over {MAD} and {Co...y}

    1. Leader = NO I (No. 1, 1 is treated as I)
      Spans -> crosses or goes around (containment indicator), A spans B means A goes around B
      Cross = MAD
      Country for starters = C (first letter of Country, "for starters" indicates picking of 1st letter)
      NOI around MAD + C gives NO(MAD)I + C => NOMADIC (wandering)
