It seems the dual role of "craft" in this sentence is intentional and integral to the cryptic nature of the clue itself.

Nice pangram from Hypatia. Missed her grid last month. Interesting grid with plenty of 4- and 5-letter words, and the occasional cheeky wording. Nice wordplay for CHAPRASSI, and good use of "craft" as ARK. I enjoyed 17A "changed what happened at noon? (7) AMENDED".
ReplyDeleteMy main complaint about today's clues would be in 5D "Old fellow fractures finger in the present (8) OFFERING" in which I must point out that OFFERING is "A" present and not "THE" present as indicated in the clue. THE present would indicate that the definition is for "now", or for a specific present from prior context, which is lacking.
CHAR as "daily" seems dated but acceptable I suppose.
Nice to see the setter reference internet-culture in many places.
The clue make no sense if you put A instead of THE!!

DeleteI see the point you make with respect to "the present" vs "present". As noted by Colonel, the clue loses cryptic reading when you replace "the" or any other connector as can be seen in the thread.
Also, "fractures" is certainly a valid anagram indicator - in the context of cracks/breaks. I am not sure why there is a doubt about this (Padmanabhan sir at 16:24)

"Within" means "contained in", therefore its antonym "without" means "containing".

I have seen it widely used both in clue writing competitions and published grids and don't think there should be any issues in using it as such.
