Got the answer, but couldn't figure out the throne part. So I was left with ag for aging heartless.

    2. Throne requires an indicator because its a very colloq/humour.

      Delete
    3. Trump may have upgraded the definition of throne. Allegedly, while being POTUS, he used to tweet from the Loo. 🤣

      Delete
    4. John, can, loo etc are also colloquial synonyms and used in cryptics without any specific indicator. Hence decided to avoid an extra indicator which would have also impacted the surface.

If anything left you can go for it.

  33. Grid is complete. Maybe couple of inconsequential fine tunes are left.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok. But I strongly disagree with your usage of 'inconsequential'
    🙂

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nice puzzle. Thanks Krisskross.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Tricky puzzle requiring attention to small details. The grid was weakly connected, splitting into 4 quarters that were joined only through 4-letter words in the center. That slowed down the solving speed compared to prior puzzles.

1A TOGETHER as "One" gave a bright start to the puzzle. AFRO as "hairstyle" (5A) and SPORT as "joke" (10A) set a jolly tone for the grid. I had filled in 9A as ENVISION, which got me stuck with 4D and scratching my head on the anno for a long time.

OLA as "taxi service" in 24A was similar in spirit to Vidwan's UBER from a few days ago (THC #13932, 15D). BIDEN was (once again uninvited) seen in "wait carrying drinks for starters" in 6D {FOR}{BID{D}E}{N}. Can healthy breakfast food cheer? Perhaps in 26D TOAST [DD], with an implicit nod toward "oats". 22D {MAS}{ALA} fit in well next to it.

16A & 14A WEDDING VOWS as "Swear words exchanged during a match?" was clue of the day. Congratulations to the players of the "match" and hope it ends in a "tie".

Some clever clues were 21A LENT ("Advanced Fast" - DD), 19A {AP{RIC(-e)}OT} ("A vessel containing mostly cereal and fruit") and "A second-grade path" for {A}{B}{ROAD} in 27A. Even the simple telescopic clues like 3A GOVERN ("rule of king over nation") were well-set, and a nice visual scene was provided in 8D with "duck crossing one small lake". The HP in 11A KNOW (~no) and the charades in 17D {LACE}{RATE} & 20D {T}{ACT} were first-rate.

While "Queen" as CARD was brilliant in 30A, the "say" indicator was perhaps not required for this clue. On the other hand, it could have been used in 21A, where the hilarious but dodgy definition of "throne" was specified for LOO. In that clue, I had filled in LON{GAG}O taking GAG = phoney and scratching my head on the "LONO" part.

With no entry from Lightning this month, I hope we get another edition of KrisKross before the rotation moves to the next setter.

    1. To expect the solver to get 'card' from queen would not have been fair. Say is a MUST.

      Delete
    2. 21A- I think 'Phony' did the job there, though it could have placed better, say,as 'Phony throne'. What I like to call - write the clue in prose order!

      Delete
    3. Phoney is the anind as it is.
A extra phoney before the throne would have done it? Like..

Aging, heartless phoney occupying phoney throne in the distant past (4,3)
