ReplyDeleteHappy Independence Day to all !
ReplyDeleteNice artwork by Prasanna and beautiful rangoli by Gowri!
ReplyDeleteQuite a nice and delightfully solvable grid from Afterdark. There were plenty of charades, and some nice surface readings (eg. 12A Dreamt of soldier being in the embrace of wanton maiden). Solving 8D going down the middle of column 8 was simple enough and was key to connecting the grid. Overall the clueing was tight with only a couple of redundant link-words for connecting definitions and wordplays on the surface.
ReplyDeleteI noticed some interesting usages. To name a few: the setter frequently clues the letter A = 1 or One; ANDA defined as "egg in India"; "six" used as roman numeral definition for VI in 2 clues; CHE as "rebel" in 28A; and "court" for SEE in 20D. 11A ORTEGA and 16A SYBIL were interesting choices. I had to Google for GOURAMI.
The setter uses a characteristic pattern of "anagram with fodder deletions" that I noted in 4 clues.
Delete10A UNGENEROUS (neurosurgion - ro)*
16A SIBYL (visibly - vi)*
18A EDELWEISS (wild seeds - d)*
