ReplyDeleteIt was so easy and hardly any questions. Finished the grid while watching Medvedev finish Alcaraz. A little disappointed there.
ReplyDeleteThe grid design was the same as yesterday. Incognito uses it frequently. There were some easy acrostics at the bottom right corner. "Know" as KEN in 28A was an interesting verb of Dutch & German origins. The "sad and tailless bull running around with last piece of rope" in 7D was a nice surface and had echoes of the "toad hopping around damaged tent" in yesterday's puzzle. 18D also had a neat surface reading. The word NYALA (14D) appears to be frequently used in THC - at least 25 times previously as per a search through this blog!
ReplyDeleteIt was impossible to get the anno for 2D even after solving the clue. It seems that "violent death" is on double duty as [anagrind][anagram] and part of the definition "cause of violent death...?" The words "by" in 17A and "and" in 7D could have been avoided as link-words (it would necessitate removal of "is" in the case of 17A for a grammatically correct surface).
2D was the last one to fall in place for me with the inevitable assumption /conclusion that 'violent death' is on double duty.
