  35. 16A Complain about average cycles
    CRAP = Complain
    Cycles is cycle , cycle
    C from cycle
    Average is PAR
    Cycle PAR to RAP
    We get {C}{RAP}

    1. Incorrect. The crossings don't fit.

    3. From Free dictionary.. .
      cir·ca (sûr′kə)
      prep. Abbr. C. or CA
      In approximately; about: born circa 1900.

      In this case About = C
      Average = PAR cycling P goes down ..ARP = C+ARP = Complain

      Delete
    4. Me bad. It should have been ARP and not RAP

      Delete
  36. 16a CARP: complain
    C(about) ARP (par: average cycles)
    Cycles means par can become arp or rpa such that the cyclic order of the letters remains unaltered.
    Rap is reversal. It’s cyclic order can only give apr and pra.

  38. Great puzzle today from Crescent. Easier than usual but very enjoyable. AT A PINCH, GARROTTE, RESOLUTE were some favs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The puzzle was more accessible than usual from Crescent. For the first time I managed 100% completion without any trouble. Though I am not a fan of 10A REAL MADRID, I enjoyed many of the charades in the grid such as 15D {LIKE}{NESS}. I wasn't able to find "streak" and "course" listed as synonyms in Chambers online. However, I did find it in thefreedictionary.com, used by Col. Though I was not convinced by "up" as anagrind in 2D, it is listed by Azed as an "advanced" indicator on Clue Clinic.

    Note to Col: It was nice to see COL appear in the grid at 5D. The dictionary link provided for 25A ROUNDS ON incorrectly points to the dictionary page for 23D TONY.

    1. In 2D "One made up, not author's original, including Wodehouse's alias?"
      'made' could've been doing double duty. 'Made up' as anind.
      Anyhow, I have come upon up and on indicating different ways today.
