ReplyDeleteSathia
A slow start and a sprint in the middle with a smooth finish.
ReplyDelete23 A I am not convinced . "Retreat" means "Go back" and not just "leave"
ReplyDeleteTypo in 26A solution provided. It should be P for Peru instead of PE shown.

ReplyDeletebuys PLENTIFUL CASES of beer and has them STACKED in his store room.
The tins of beer later consumed by him are COUNTLESS!!

Happy birthday Colonel. Wish you a long and healthy life
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have been critical of Afterdark's puzzles in the past, I came here to say that I enjoyed today's grid. Many of the surface readings were entertaining (eg. AIRCRAFT, COUNTLESS, and FLIES) and some of the wordplay was appreciated, especially "moonset" as fodder+anagrind in one word. I was able to complete the puzzle before the 30 minute mark was up. Thanks Afterdark.
ReplyDeleteRe: IXL 2023 Finals. With just over a week left before the grand finale in Bengaluru, my travel arrangements have been frozen and I am practicing diligently. Given that it is my first time in the competition and many of the other qualifiers have significantly more experience, I would be satisfied with 60-70% completion in the prelims round. I'm working through a compilation of ~600 clues by Arden & Dr. X for practice (the challenge being to solve the clues without any grid or crossings). Although truth be told, I have solved so many crosswords since the beginning of IXL that I will be happy to take a break once it is over.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck. But don't "economize" your skills to Arden/Dr.X girds! You may have to practice other setters' [like Fraz/Xchequer] grids too.
DeleteWish you best of luck!
DeleteHope ur health is much better now!
Remember not to get stuck with anno's.
DeleteAnd practice identifying def before you finish reading the clue.
Anno's should flash at the background but no need to stop for explicit confirmation.
Thanks Sree and KKR for your tips. I think I'll practice some of the other setters, considering that we are due to have 4 Dr. X grids in THC this week.
Delete@Gowri mam, thank you. Health is improving gradually.
It was indeed a breeze after dark today. I finished in 20 mins. Had to double check the setter.
ReplyDeleteMy fav - ZIGZAGS, ASTRONOMER, PLENTIFUL.
