ReplyDelete19D- what is the purpose if 'starts' in the clue? It is confusing and Needless. I was trying to fix some first letters.
ReplyDeleteTypo. Please read as of 'starts' instead if 'if'.
DeleteHave the same doubt. It has to be the anagram indicator. Is it?
Delete'starts' is an anind according to http://www.clueclinic.com/index.php/anagram-indicators/
DeleteTo my memory, I am coming across for the first time.
Delete@Paddy: Start-To cause to become displaced or loosened.
Delete@Paddy, in THC its Vidwan's signature anind.
DeleteHe even used starts to mean start+start with both the meanings (begining and cause to become)
@vasant, i think it has limited usage as anind: causes to become: in some ways has to be final product. So works with full anagram. (Ie where the final solution is obtained by anagram only)
It doesnt work with part anagram, imho. (Because part of anagr doesnt become final soluton)
If start/ starts becomes anind, how do we distinguish between anind/ first letter picking? Does it not become ambiguous?
DeleteI don't see it in the list of aninds in the Chambers CW dictionary that I have (print edition) May be it is included in subsequent editions?
DeleteIt is not in CW Unclued list also. So I take it as non standard.
DeleteIts a later day addition from moatly australian editions.
DeleteThink about "around" on the same lines.
Intransitive verb form of start (anagrind comes after the fodder) works as anagrind. It means “to move suddenly and violently”.
DeleteClue clinic is a very reliable source, IMHO.
MW lists start (transitive verb) = to cause to become loosened or displaced. So it should also work as anagrind as listed by clue clinic. But I don’t have an example sentence.
Paddy,
It’s up to the solver to understand the function of an indicator based on the clue . For example, “about” can be used as container ind , reversal ind, anagrind and as a charade component.
Staggering! ( gives a start?!) mmmm..... we keep learning. Unfortunately my recall memory is not as good as it used to be!!
DeleteJust read it as "startling"./starting
DeleteNice enjoyable CW.
ReplyDelete29A the enu should be (2-2), right?
ReplyDeleteAlso, enu for 2D should be 5,3- Black eye.
ReplyDeleteHyphenated words are Setters Call. (
DeleteI don't think Black eye is a hyphenated word.
Delete21D (OFF)(END) - hurt; (DD)
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is a DD.
DeleteIt is not a DD
DeleteThanq esteemed Vidwan for compiling this tricky CW grid & also let guys like me to learn a couple of new words such as SOLSTITIAL although I was aware of 21 June being the longest day & also the related word SOLSTICE.
ReplyDeleteVidwans puzzles becoming easier? However did not get BLACKEYE becos I thought it is BLACK EYE & not hyphenated.
ReplyDeleteIn 3dn - comrade oddly means - pick the odd letters or even letters?
Can someone explain?
I got the answer becos of crossings!
3D valid question. But, it is oddly seen frequently in THCC.

ReplyDeleteHere is an odd clue. Perhaps, passable?
