  26. Dead men's fingers also mean a type of soft coral, a very common actinozoan coelenterate. It also means the poisonous parts of a crab or other edible shelfish.

      Lay = SET
      Short one = ON
      ending in fourteen = N
      lines = insertion indicator (A B lines -> B inside A)
      ON + N inside SET -> SONNET
      The whole clue is the meaning of SONNET (a short song with 14 lines)
