You are most welcome. What are your doubts?
Delete9A: pretending to shred= air cutter
ReplyDeleteImaginary is air
Axe is cutter
Sathia
Is is Air guitar?
DeleteAir cutter only. Why Air Guitar?
DeleteIt is AIR GUITAR, an imaginary instrument played while miming.
Delete"Axe" is a synonym for guitar, while "shredding" is used to describe guitar-playing.
That is new. Thanx.
DeleteThanks Economiser for correcting me.
DeleteSathia
Too complicates clue requiring exquisite knowledge of guitar (i used to till i gave up my Givson to alma mater music club).
DeleteAxe is a slang for saxaphone that settled on to electric guitar.
Shred is a technique of playing guitar.
No special knowledge required. Chambers lists "guitar" under the entry for "axe" and OED lists a style of guitar playing under shredding.

Straddling denotes insertion of Educe in DD

Delete21A IDEA? (DD)
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. This is a triple-definition clue.
DeleteI think 12A and 21A fall under the category of triple definions.
ReplyDeleteI also think so.
DeleteIs it a new type of clue
You are correct, these are triple-definitions. I don't think it's new, but it is certainly an unusual clue type.

Flooding- Relook the clue
Delete5D marinated. Like @sree sree pointed, relook.
Delete22A Ecuadorian, I have the same question.
OK flooding is anagrind & immersed is the definition. Thanx Prasad.
DeleteFrom chambers:
Deleteoppressive adj 1 cruel, tyrannical and unjust • an oppressive regime. 2 causing worry or mental distress; weighing heavily on the mind. ***3 said of the weather: heavy, hot and sultry.*** oppressively adverb. oppressiveness noun.
ETYMOLOGY: 17c.
So a cruel regime!
DeleteNot so sure post 2021!
DeleteEven so crosswords should stay away from such political clueing.
Oppressive adj ***3 said of the weather: heavy, hot and sultry.***
DeleteHow is this implying anything political? The clue is describing Ecuador as a country with hot climate.
Thanks for the special Economizer
