    5D- Def. is only 'Pastry Dish'. 'Pie' from typically american. This is what I found on googling-
    Although apple pies have been eaten since long before the European colonisation of the Americas, "as American as apple pie" is a saying in the United States, meaning "typically American". In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, apple pie became a symbol of American prosperity and national pride.

      Def.- Pastry dish
      But I am unable to explain 'wrote finally' which is expected to give E.
      Also, I do not understand how do you get 'Pi' in your anno.

      Some vegetables which are botanically fruits (such as tomatoes) are considered to be vegetables in the culinary (eating) sense. A botanist may nod in your favour if you say a tomato is a fruit, but we buy it from a vegetable vendor and not a fruit seller ;)

    Pete O' BRIEn was the owner of ALLIED AUTO.
    He was an epicurean and loved his LEMONADE, APPLE PIE, SEA BASS MEAT, BIRYANI and to top it all, YOGURT.
    But his business WENT BAD as he took an order to export PEACHES , BILBERRY AND PAPAYA.
    The fruits came back as RE- EXPORTS.
    Forlorn he was found to LOAF and STRAY in the market place. He soon saw some PALMISTS and approached one of them.
    " Your problem line is HERE. Something to do with INERT GAS, carbide and the like".

    RE is short for Royal Engineers, a section of the UK armed forces. THey are sappers - or soldiers responsible for tasks such as building and repairing roads and bridges, laying and clearing mines, etc.

    Sap is a synonym of trench. Sappers used to dig trenches, though some sappers take up blogging on crosswords after retirement
