ReplyDeleteI remember seeing my first Tarzan movie when I was around 5 year old. It had Johnny Weissmuller an Olympic and World record holder in swimming, acting as Tarzan,

ReplyDeleteToday's topic dictated itself.
Unlike today's children with a breakfast of MUESLI & Maggi Noodles, kids of my generation (1960s -70s) grew up on a staple diet of RICE & TARZAN COMICS, the RAGE of that era.
I still remember my Dad's rickety BIKE & our monthly visits (usually the 1st Sunday) to the semi open FOUNDRY, to have one or the other part repaired or replaced. The Bookworm was across the road - with an array of Comics displayed in the window.
My brother & I had a regular GAME PLAN. To repeatedly tell my Dad, the repairs are taking very long & it is very hot or cold depending on the season. My brother, who with his acting abilities could give any MEGA STAR, a run for his money, would wrinkle his nose, curl his TOES & plead innocently - 'Can't we wait somewhere INDOORS?' Then slowly we would drag my Dad to the Bookshop which was always very cool in summers with its bamboo & khus khus chicks sprayed with water & warm in winters with its lone room heater & wooden floors.
Once inside, we would immediately make a beeline for the latest issues of TARZAN Comics, PRAYING, there should be no price hike. Through 10 years, the comic prices rose from 1Re to Rs 3.50 each. We would wait with our HEARTS in our mouths till my Dad gave a positive RESPONSE - to our buying a maximum of 2 comics, one for each of us.
The owner of the bookshop was one Mr. AGHA, who allowed us to browse & read all other comics (Archies, Dennis, Tin Tin & Asterix), because he knew we would always buy only TARZAN.
For those who are uninitiated, TARZAN is a fictional character created by Edgar RICE Burroughs, in 1912, in a novel TARZAN of the APES with 23 sequels. The character became so popular, that he was adapted in many other media - first in Comics & later in movies & TV Serials. The Comics appeared first as Daily Strips & Sunday Strips in Newspapers & later as Comic books. DC Comics took over the character in 1972, to produce some absolutely classic books scripted & drawn by Joe Kubert & Russ Manning. Some of these were adaptations of Burroughs books, while many were original scripts, which still IMBUED the spirit & ethos of Edgar's Tarzan.
These are the books, which are our treasure troves, even today, which we have STUBBORNLY held on to almost 40+ years later. I can distinctly recall the winter days in Delhi, when we ATE IN, & got into our Razais by 8pm. For 2 hours of Tarzan time daily. Or the summer nights, when swinging on a T BAR, my brother & I discussed Tarzan for long hours under the moonlight.
In 1977, Marvel took over the character & produced 29 issues & 3 annuals. But by then, we had graduated to reading more serious stuff & our association with Tarzan in the print media petered out.
Now comes my 2nd instalment of Tarzan. Movies of course. I must have seen atleast a dozen
The first was watching TARZAN goes to India in 1976. It was a LEAP YEAR & we actually saw the movie on Feb 29th, with my UNCLE, who had returned recently, from an expedition to ICELAND. There was so much HOO HA about this movie, where Tarzan comes to India to save 300 elephants.
My father's STENO had arranged for the tickets & 2 were together & one was separate. I was torn ASUNDER, not able to decide if I should sit with my brother or my UNCLE. Finally sibling love won the day. My brother's awe struck expression at the stunts is still etched in my mind.
The 2nd incident involved watching TARZAN & JANE, an animated comedy with my son. Produced by Walt Disney in 2002, the film is made up of 3 self contained episodes, via flashback. Although technically far advanced than the earlier movies, with a humorous touch to the script, the film did not evoke the same RESPONSE in me. A typical new generation kid, my son had grown up on DRAGNET & MAFIA movies & Tarzan did not impress him much. He seemed to care more for the trivia that Johnny Weissmuller, the original TARZAN had been a SWIMMING CHAMPION & kept wondering why there were no underwater fights. All in all it was rather a damp squib.
ReplyDeleteWith this came the realisation, that our childhood had been far simpler & a movie or a comic book was a real treat. Tarzan represented the few & far between treats we had as children. Today's children live in a fast paced world & their idea of entertainment & fun is very different from ours.
Today, almost 20 years later, my son told me, the other day, that he remembered my wonder struck face, when we watched Tarzan together & this memory is etched in his mind. Life indeed comes a full circle.
