  2. CANDLESTICK as "wicked thing" and EARLIER as "more like a nobleman" were funny. ELLA FITZGERALD as "scatter" became clear once I looked her up. AVIATORS and ORCHIDS were well-clued. In 2D, the surface reading of "12 down" was clever misdirection.

  3. I'm unsure where {I} is coming from in 8d. "The writer" is "I"? If so I don't quite follow the construction, why put it in the middle? I'm probably off track here.

    Never heard of a brasserie, good word to know. BROWN BREAD also a new term for me. Stimulating solve all around. Happy Sunday!

    1. If we remove the colon and rewrite grammatically it becomes.
      The writer (is) in ..........
      Read in as inside.
