DeleteLove Marriage is the definition.
Delete@ Gowri: kiss is x and hug is o. I was sure about x. I have since verified for o.
Delete@Gowri
DeleteThe X represents a kiss, while the O represents a hug. This is most likely because the X is a stylized way of showing two mouths kissing, and the O looks like two pairs of arms connecting for a hug

4a CICADA = Computer language on electronics chip
ReplyDeleteAlso an insect?
DeleteYes, Crawler
DeleteCAD is computer language. But CIA is electronic chip?
DeleteNo. Faulty container!
DeleteCicada language is a dependently typed programming language and an interactive theorem prover.
DeleteADA is a computer language.
DeleteC is computer
IC is electronic chip.
So can we say C and ADA(computer languages) over IC giving (C)(IC)(ADA) - crawler(defn)?
DeleteWe can. You have nailed it. I had my doubts but indeed ADA is a comp language. Good solve there!!
DeleteAda is a language as is C.
DeleteCad is not a language. It's an application using Lisp & other languages.
We can call it a team effort. @Geetha almost solved it. I just put the anno together.

Thanks everyone for spending time on this puzzle. Thanks for the discussion and all the comments. I'm in a different time zone, so I was asleep while you all were solving this.
ReplyDeleteHere are some of the intended annotations
ReplyDelete4a. Yes, C and ADA are the computer languages
ReplyDeleteWhats the container?
Delete"running" and "on an" were supposed to convey it
DeleteDont think "on" Is a container. Running over would have been better.
DeleteWell, I tried to phrase that one exactly as someone like me (someone who works with computer programs) would say it. I agree it defies cryptic crossword styles. And we have crawlers also in our domain, they can be helpful or harmful in a deadly way.
DeleteBut then, a crawler would run computer programs, not languages, on the hardware.
Delete15a. Ordered was the homophone indicator, as in when one orders food by telling the waiter. In case it is not a good way to clue, do tell me.
ReplyDelete"Homophone indicators: These words give a sense of something being listened to or said aloud. They can include words such as on the air, broadcast, I hear, said, declared, audibly, outspoken, reportedly, sounds like and vocal."
DeleteOperative word:
being listened to. (Something said aloud would be listened to).
Ordered here need to be understood as a verbal order.
And even so it is so definitive that it implies that what is said is understood correctly and implemented.
No scope for ambiguous understanding which is a requirement for hp indicator.
Hi Sree Sree,
DeleteDoesn't the waiter get it wrong quite often? At least it happens to me a lot.
I do see the point that ordered is not used as a homophone indicator in cryptic crosswords, there are plenty of terms used commonly, as you have listed.
A pro waiter always repeats and confirms what he heard!
DeleteSome NY restuarants taught me that "customer is expected to ask the waiter to repeat and confirm. Thats part of ordering process"
18a. Slaughter was on double duty, meaning as well as anind
ReplyDelete27a. Rao's explanation at 16:08 is as intended.
ReplyDelete17d. I was trying to use the XOXO terms used in short messages these days. I'm looking at the Wikipedia link again now. XO is hugs and kisses. But now I am getting confused, is X the kiss or is O the kiss, or is XO just together hugs and kisses ???
ReplyDeleteACRONYMS DICTIONARY
DeleteXOX
or XOXO
May 22, 2018
WHAT DOES XOX MEAN?
XOX, or XOXO, means hugs and kisses, with the x representing kisses and the o representing hugs. It’s usually used as a lighthearted way of expressing affection, sincerity, or deep friendship.
Maybe, to be more precise, the clue should have been "Say, hugs and kisses within . . . "
ReplyDeleteChristians (x) kiss, jews hug. (Just a way to remember)
DeleteI thought in gen z language -
DeleteX is hugs showing crossed arms
O is kiss - showing a puckered mouth.
My understanding is a hug is when our hands go around another person. - O
DeleteKiss is crossing of lips. Also when the word is reduced to a single letter, it becomes X.
All in all, precision is what is needed in cryptic CW and not doubts and guesses.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Computer wizards (as I would like to call them) assume what they know is known to everybody- not necessarily.
