Good solve!
ReplyDeleteJayant is father of Amjad Khan (Sholay villain). Amjad appears in 4th row as Nina.
ReplyDeleteSathia
👌
DeleteWajid Ali and vatsayan too. The characters he played
I can see "Anne" also. Hathaway shares dob with Amjad Khan
ReplyDeleteGreat!
DeleteI can see Gab- short for Gabbar Singh?
Oh, the ANNE is just a nice coincidence, I hadn't even noticed!
DeleteThe other half of GABBAR is there too :-)
Delete21D - outstanding WP......special thanks to setter and Col.sir selected the unsolved clue......
ReplyDeleteThanks to all solvers for solving and comments, and thanks for the blog, Col.! Here are my notes for this crossword:
ReplyDeleteNotes
The actor Amjad Khan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amjad_Khan_(actor)) is the theme of this crossword. AMJAD can be seen as a nina running across the middle row. KHAN is a part of the solution to 14d. The title refers to Amjad Khan's father, Zakaria Khan (himself a well-known actor of yore), whose screen name was Jayant. Three of Amjad Khan's famous movie roles can be found in the puzzle.
GABBAR (from Sholay, 1975) is formed by 5d and 25d.
WAJID ALI (from Shatranj Ke Khilari, 1977) can be seen going down the first column.
VATSAYAN (from Utsav, 1984) can be seen running down the last column.
Personal notes
My open source crossword construction software, Exet (https://exet.app) has hit Version 1.00. Starting at v0.00 in September 2020, that's 101 releases over five years (not counting several minor tweaks) (https://github.com/viresh-ratnakar/exet/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md). From coding up "beam search" (for auto-fill) and "set union-find with rank compression" (for grid connectivity) to figuring out how to efficiently search for multi-word anagrams, it's been so much fun—the best possible use of my computer science education.
In political news, Mamdani mania has swept through and swept New York, and I'm here for it. Well done, Mira!

ReplyDeleteI thought it was a difficult grid. Pleasantly surprised to solve it.
ReplyDeleteStraightforward wp and clues leading naturally to solutions. Hats off!
My fav
BOOZIEST, STALK, HORSEPLAY, IDIOPHONE.
Thanx!
My view, if I am eligible to offer one, is that Gussalufz is deliberately overdoing the CWs. But, then we can have it on the ground that its after all finding solution to riddles ; Especially so, when we have the easier ones from Incognito. 🙏🌹🙏
ReplyDeleteYou're certainly entitled to your view! But "deliberately overdoing the CWs" is definitely not my intent. Trying to set fair clues with interesting (at least to me) surfaces, having fun while setting, and hoping that most clues resonate with some solvers who have fun while solving — that's the deliberate intent. Hope some future clues of mine resonate with you too!
DeleteThis time round, many resonated with me and the grid left me all smiles when I finished.
DeleteThank u Viresh!
Thanks Gowri, that's always great to hear!
