  1. Thank you Neyartha for an armchair tour of Africa.
19D- Where do we get the A from? Not clear in the link given.
12A- Up in an Ac. clue? Is it now accepted?

    1. Why - the country names are not too obscure.

    2. Where's the problem there? H Sam's is anag fodder; 'bad' is anag signal, smash-up is the answer. No rev involved. Morever, up/down prob in such clues arises nly in the clue - not the answer!

    3. I took it like Col. has indiacted in the blog- 'bad accident' as def. and up for reversal. From what you say only 'accident' is the def.

  3. Lucky to get Horn of Africa early to get the theme.

  4. 5A The only purpose of officer as I could see is to compete the 'telescopic' part and not to leave it open-ended

    1. Perhaps for the same reason that "finds an" is used in 25D: for a meaningful surface

    4. Obviously, word is hard to be clued- as hard as the urundai itself!

    5. Interestingly the etymology is Porul Vilanga Urundai = It's not understood what ingredients are there in this urundai.

    6. You're right, Shrri. Does it not mean '' a round item whose meaning is not known? It is my favourite cannonball for the teeth !! My granny used to make it for me. I reckon, it is available only in Madras these days as my friend used to bring it for me whenever he visits there.

I believe, the basic ingredient is urad daal and the tang comes from a generous addition of dried ginger and jaggery. The jaggery syrup gives it the hardness ?

CV: UDAL+PORUL+AAVI + a charade for the missing letters ! Intersting variet of words get thrown up by Anagram solver !!

    7. Porivilangai Urundai! Giving it a fair try...Also definitely want to try this dish now:)

One very pure A-one grain ladoo with primarily unknown nutritious ingredients! Fantastic, oddly not over-sweet (12, 7)

      (I + V + PURE + A + I + GRAIN LADOO + U + N + I)* - OE; Defn = sweet.

  10. Could someone help me understand why Oriental was given as part of the clue in 20a? I have just started solving these :)

  11. Oriental is Eastern represented by E normally in CW's.

  12. Though Nairobi/Kenya is not part of the Horn of Africa, it bears the brunt of the gore created by the horns there ! Sudan also adds to the misery. Neyartha's tour missed this out.

NO bumpy safari rides , though in this compilation.
