I too am with you. I solved the clue as below:
      Not so much = LESS
Charge = [-F]ee (female having left]
      Renter [def] = LESS EE

Unfortunately for us, the paper gives different solution!

  27. The bouncer and the dancer - Part 14

There was no apparent TUG OF WAR situation as the two were taken away and a RIOT ACT was not seen.

The hamlet was conservative and the performance FLATLY refused and rightly so. Uncle Sam seemed to be HEAVEN SENT.

The scene INCHED forward to completion and nothing was left in the CUISINE.
One did WITNESS gay abandon - not a NOISELESS scene.

Celebrations over and nearly all had left whence a COMPATRIOT accompanied by a few and the mystic and the snake dancer re-entered the hall.

    THE PLOT THICKENS!

    LE(T)'S SEE what happens next....

    1. Great idea. Hope many can join. If finalised, can make all arrangements . Convenient dzate to be fixed, except 5th of May when there is an English play: The Virtuous Burglar: directed by my wife. Lets zero in on a suitable date.

      3. Apartment lately vacated showing no emotion (6) In the blog the last LY is shown as deletion , whereas the deletion indocator is L_atelY, = lately vacated. Minor flaw, thats all !

Gridman's clues always lead one gently to the answers, without any roughing up of the thinking process. A good teacher for primers.
