  8. It was a decent crossword with perhaps one too many charades. (I have a pent up rant on the topic of "charade overdose" - also covered in CrosswordUnclued; I shall save it for a day when we must solve one by the worst offender). As with yesterday's puzzle, many clues contained parts of the solution given "as is", to be used without any modification. 4D PLEASED AS PUNCH and 9D BLACK SWAN EVENT were fairly simple anagrams which opened up the grid, while 14A TRADE SECRETS and 18A HAPPENSTANCE were reasonably clued and solvable with some crossings. The bottom-left corner had some tough clues, while LANTANA in the top right was tough. Some surface readings were poor (eg. 21A, 12A, 2D), and a few clues contained dodgy link words like "since" (1D) and "their" (14A). 3D was a good charade, while 17D had good wordplay with "going steady" = DATING and the surface of 19D was well written.
