    1. s. for succeeded usually appears in biographical/genealogical notes in compendiums giving hundreds of entries and where space is limited.

  5. 25A-Poles give N,N &S.It is unusual.

  6. The anno as given by the Col N (O) N S is perfect. That's my thought too.
sree_sree's anno is possible as per his U (which is very wide when it's expanded).
Top is from 'it spins', of course.

  9. I really don't know what percentage the Hindu readership does the crossword at all and how many even among them bring it under the powerful lens.
    Comments here have become technical.

    1. Yes, very technical. Practically under a microscope.

    2. What percentage?I was just thinking about this the other day..the township I live in, in the Hindi belt, among a population of 3 lakhs, I think only a couple do. The previous township in UP the figure would be same. The percentages improve in Metros and other big cities. It is I think more popular in South India and South Indians if we go by the solvers, Commenters and setters appearing here. It would be an interesting survey if it is done.

    3. The question is What percentage of our population do crosswords?

    4. i was ardent fan of "the hindu" till 1994 (student life). work life has been taking me to places where i could get paper only the next day. it was difficult to get the paper even in kolkota (2001). but i used to get it (the value was more in details and depth of reporting and not just headlines) great relief from 2001 to 2010 while i was in hyderabad. but the quality has gone down from 2012-13 and i started noticing printing errors and grammatical mistakes around that time. the overall quality looked like TOI (headlines first, report first). i cant get the paper in rajahmundry without making a special visit to railway station. with diminishing quality i dont make the effort. so now i am limited to crossword online version.

    5. I used to read the print edition till 2011. I used to get the paper in Rudrapur(Uttarakhand), Shimla and Jammu.
The sports column was my favourite. Writers such as R.Mohan, Nirmal Shekhar wrote with great depth and elan.

  10. In Durgapur, WB, in 1957, when I was 14 years old, my father as a postal subscriber, used to get the paper. It arrived one or two days after publication date. I was an ardent reader.

  11. TH used to be sent to my town Tindivanam (near Villupuram) by train and it would reach the rly. station late night/ early morning. People looking for school/ college results published in it would be waiting eagerly at that odd hour. Later on after Neyveli became active, it used to be sent by a car from Chennai to Neyveli and all the towns en route (including ours) would be covered by that. Funny part is that this car would pick up passengers waiting at the bus stand to go to Chennai and the local Th agent would be helpful in fixing people. All unofficial of course.

  12. Of course, after the car was arranged we used to get a later edition.

  14. vasant.....% of crossword is very limited. I started cross word from 1996 especially in printed edition.....but I could not get any clue and definition. i knew that students especially from chennai spent time in THC....so still I am fond of THC....very much interested to interact this blog......

  15. You are most welcome here. Quite a few of us have honed our CE solving skills after following the blog and interacting with some of ace solvers here who are only too willing to clear any doubts.

  16. It would seem that though the number of solvers is less, those who are into the game are keen.
I know a solver from our regularly attending music concerts at various venues and getting introduced to each other.
I bumped into him at a restaurant yesterday. He turned to me from the nearby table and said, "The H crossword was good."

  17. Paddy: there were two R Mohans in the HINDU and one of them passed away last year. Is the second one on to the Deccan Chronicle now? Is he Resident Editor now? I like the DC because it publishes some of the writers from the Spectator of the UK. I miss reading the DC and its crosswords in the magazine section.

I too have wondered oftentimes about the percentage of the reading population in the country who do the cryptic crosswords. Alas, these are only used as ' fillers' of space in the newspapers. I reckon, except the Hindu all others are publishing only syndicated crosswords from the UK papers and the Hindu is the only one that has local talent as compilers.

ARDEN follows the elegant British pattern and talent in compiling and is my favourite, while Gridman remains the all-time choice. Out of the box compilers here are KKR and Dr Nabar. Haven't we got an good admixture ?

    1. Raju,

You can read the e paper version of DC and do the CW also. I used to do it when I was in U.S.also. I will send you the link.
To my knowledge R.Mohan, who was covering sports in TH is now the Resident Editor of DC,Chennai. CV should know better.
