18a possible is a verb?
ReplyDeleteNo. 'Possible' one of the few adjectives used as an Anagram indicator, as in
Delete'able to be' or 'able to become'.
Thanks.
Delete28a a doubt, doesnt "new" And "anew" Have different meanings!
ReplyDelete'RECRUDESCENCE' is a noun meaning 'a new outbreak'. You're mistaking it with the verb 're·cru·desce', meaning 'break out anew'.
ReplyDeleteRe- , always implies again which is not new.
DeleteRecurrence is subset of ocurrence, so outbreak itself is a synonym of recrudescence.
The dict i have says its recurrence of outbreak.
Good exchanges. Interesting things to learn.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is a strange language-
ReplyDelete1A- Let= hindrance
10A- Let= Allow
Let as a hindrance may be familiar to followers and players of tennis- when a service hits the net but falls in the court. Probably an extension of the meaning allow.
DeleteIts actually opposite.
Deletehttps://thetennisbros.com/tennis-tips/rules/let-in-tennis/
It is not opposite. It is a hindrance But why it is let is because it lets you play the point again.
DeleteLovely cross word from Arden. 25 D brought a chuckle in me, all the more prevalent in today's India. 28 A was new to me. Thanks Arden.

ReplyDeleteLearnt some new words today - EGGBEATER, TWIRP, SEAGIRT, Morocco as ale etc. Thanks Arden and Col!
ReplyDeleteOne doubt - Since SEAGIRT is an adjective (surrounded by the sea), the def for 20A should be "like Sri Lanka'?
Yes, even I was stuck in reckoning the essence of the clue for 20-A,
DeleteAll said and done, enjoyed attempting today's grid despite not being completely successful.
No wonder, Gandhiji rightly said: EXPERIENCE IS NOTHING BUT THE NAME GIVEN BY MEN TO THE MISTAKES THEY COMMIT**
** The quote painted on the wall of our dining hall of Airmen's Mess at Air Force Station, Chakeri, Kanpur way back in 1966.
Incidentally, my first posting as an Airman after training at 3 GTS in Jalahalli, Bangalore
Several dictionaries including Collins give seagirt as a noun.
DeleteOh ok. I checked Chambers and Merriam-Webster online and it showed it as an adjective. Hence my doubt.
Deletesea-girt adj, poetry surrounded by the sea.
Kudos to you. You are the one who completed it.
ReplyDelete26ac - ENTRANCED - I didn't understand the parsing. Though got it thru crossings. Can someone explain?
ReplyDeleteDream is entrance?
My anno was as follows. Requesting Arden to comment.
DeleteDream finally, spellbound (9) ENTRANCED
Dream = TRANCE
finally = in END
So, dream finally = TRANCE in END = EN(TRANCE)D => spellbound
Thanks Ramki. I was in two minds and settled for the one I had put in
DeleteThank u Ramki. I also parsed it like this. But cing col's anno - was confused.
DeleteOtherwise lovely grid. My fav - IDIOTIC, REARRANGE, ELECTRA.
