DeleteOn camera, Eject, Local radio, Sphere can be added to the theme? Only 3 have been marked. There should be more.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable as ever.
I see 'Chaupati' in the 4th column ( a Mumbai beach?)
ReplyDeleteIn which case Island, on shore are connected?
ReplyDeleteBOMBAY in 8th column
ReplyDeleteBombay is the theme. Apollo?
DeleteSauce is marked as the def. One of the meanings of sauce is insolence. Probably 'Saucy' is more commonly used to indicate insolent behaviour.
ReplyDeleteThere's one more short thematic nina (hidden in a less common manner)
ReplyDeleteJUHU
DeleteThat's it!
DeleteJio (starting from bottom to top) after Bombay column
ReplyDeleteSathia
That;s a coincidence, wasn't intentional :-). But you're close...
DeleteThanks to Col. Gopinath for blogging, and to all the solvers. Here are my notes for this crossword:
ReplyDelete**Notes**
The theme of this crossword is the city of *Mumbai.* Its oldest known name is the title, *Kakamuchee* (another, possibly slightly later name was *Galajunkja*). The more modern old name of the city, *BOMBAY,* is seen as a nina running down the middle column.
Two famous localities of the city can be seen as additional ninas: *CHAUPATI* (running down the fourth column) and *JUHU* (diagonally climbing in the bottom-right corner).
A few entries can be seen as thematic: GATEWAY (10A, for Gateway of India), APOLLO (24A, for Apollo Bunder), and ISLAND (11A). INSHORE (9A) can possibly be construed to be slightly thematic.
The entries in this crossword use 24 distinct letters, as an esoteric nod to the new year that we now find ourselves in.
The surface of 1A might seems a bit odd, but it pretty closely describes a seminal political event in India [https://www.ft.com/content/2e2d0cc4-2763-11e3-ae16-00144feab7de].
**Personal notes**
I came to Bombay in 1986 and spent four delightful years there. It continues to be the city most dear to me—a bond that I now celebrate every year with a visit and through running the half marathon there. Am looking forward to this year's visit, about to happen in just a few more days!

DeleteHas anyone come across Picard (star trek) memes! Spooner seems faar better.
ReplyDeleteExample:
Picard: how much does it cost to buy a singing ensemble
Doc: a choir
Picard: Fine, how much to acquire a singing ensemble.
Another bad convoluted puzzle by Gussalufz
ReplyDeleteThanks for your feedback. It would be useful/constructive for me to know in what way(s) did you find this to be a "bad convoluted puzzle"? Too difficult? Flawed wordplay? Surfaces not to your liking? Thanks!
DeleteGrapes are definitely sour for backward Mr OR Sundaram
