      Usage- 'Pat came the reply' came to mind.

    2. Thanks Paddy.. while I accept it.. find it hard to be completely comfortable with this explanation. In daily spoken English Pat = Smooth is too much of a stretch IMHO.

      simple and somewhat glib or unconvincing.
