ReplyDeleteQuestion on 21A: How is Smooth = Pat? Or am i getting the parsing wrong?
ReplyDeleteFree dic. gives easy, ready, smooth as synonyms for Pat.
DeleteUsage- 'Pat came the reply' came to mind.
Thanks Paddy.. while I accept it.. find it hard to be completely comfortable with this explanation. In daily spoken English Pat = Smooth is too much of a stretch IMHO.
DeletePat is what you can use instead stretch in your reply.
DeletePat adjective
simple and somewhat glib or unconvincing.
"there are no pat answers to these questions"
There are no smooth answers....
By the way, enjoyed today's puzzle. Thanks Hypatia!
