  1. Lovely enjoyable wordplay and surfaces all the way. Of course, on the tougher side. Has to cheat a few. Got some but not able to parse. Blog gave some Aha moments!

    1. Yes. Paddy you have the gift of catching each CW and assessing it as “challenging” “good” etc which echoes correctly with most of regular ( not veteran) solver’s ability!
Thanks . Also thanks to Arden for giving a wonderful CW today.

    1. Once in 5 years!! We come across a word like this!!!

      Delete
    2. It's either "a period of 5 years" or "purification"
Don't really think it's once in 5 years.

    3. This is what Free Dic. says-
A ceremonial purification of the entire ancient Roman population after the census every five years.
      2. A period of five years.

    1. There used to be indicators in the golden age of THC to read setter as something/someone that sets.

In my initial days on this Blog (2015) OED seemed a sacrosanct bible. Any usage not in the OED was to be indicated.
( I was told that THC OED meant British English as normally used in India. Even British colloq was indicated).
This is my personal understanding and need not be what is generally accepted.

  8. 10A - setter indicating about person or indicating material?????

    1. Most of the times setter is 'me'
or 'I' only. In this case setter is
material which sets. That means all gels including paste.
The man is (he) and setter is
      (gel).

    2. my doubt is painter is the man who coloring the wall / board.....it's noun. In this case setter is the person who sets the grid....The name indicating to the oerson not the Gel.

Please see above link and within that set (verb) definition no.3.

    4. On its own setter doesn't mean
crossword setter. A setter can be anything like pace setter,
      trend setter, congealer. Cement
slurry also sets (hardens). Chemicals which help cement set fast are called accelerators
but on its own accelerator doesn't mean cement setter.

    5. 10A- Def. is German philosopher
