    Is this alternate parsing acceptable ?

    (SO(SO ONI)UP)* = POISONOUS
    (SO) + ONI (Bit of onion) in (SOUP)

    Or do you say 3 letters of Onion is a bit of a stretch for "a bit" (pun unintended)
