Yes, Dr. H!
DeleteUnusually, fairly fast!!
ReplyDeleteOf course, I had to guess a few and work back.
Enjoyable as ever.
Still to look for 'First fives' and any hidden words.
No. Five firsts.
DeleteEnjoyable CW given by Gussalufz (Viresh Ratnagar). As usual treasure hunt for Pangram etc., begins!

Was surprisingly easy for a change from Veeresh ji. Couldn't get the Five firsts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for blogging, Col., and thanks, as always to all solvers.
ReplyDeleteThere's a famous phrase hidden in the grid, as is its source. An entry is connected to this source. The phrase is also hidden in the puzzle in a second, different way, and the title alludes to that.
I'll post my notes soon, feel free to skip reading them until you're ready.
Cogito ergo sum!!!
DeleteI can place Cogito in the 6th row. But ;Ergo sum'?
DeleteNotes
ReplyDeleteThe 17th century French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher, René Descartes, is the theme of this crossword. DESCARTES can be seen as a nina zigzagging across and down, starting from 4a.
The famous philosophical statement, COGITO ERGO SUM, is formed by the across cells in the 6th row from the top, 19a, and the initial part of 26a. DUALISM, his theory on the separation of mind and body, is the solution to 25a.
The title, "Five Firsts," refers to another nina, composed of the first words of the first five across clues. They form the well-known English translation of cogito ergo sum: "I Think Therefore I Am."
Personal notes
Turned 57, got good grades on the only test that matters at this age (the one that involves a slightly painful drawing), travelled to Boston, finally started earnestly reading the Discworld series, watched Artemis II head off to the moon. The world too continued to turn, and, defying all odds, explored even deeper depths of WTF-ery.
