DeletePaddy, the feedback I have received so far, including from some top-ranked setters/solvers is that it was an entertaining and enjoyable grid, which made some people chuckle from time to time. So your view is a bit of an outlier. If you can give me a specific example or two where the surface didn't make sense or could have been better, that would help. Thanks.

DeleteHarder (more potent) becomes 'arder (ardour - spirit) in this city borough. East London or Cockney is famous for dropping the leading h in words. Many got the answer from the crossing letters without getting the anno. In retrospect, the clue could have been a little simpler. Something like "Harder spirit in this..." would have been more gettable. One lives and learns...
